Aho did indeed start out with the intention of writing a violin concerto before he realised that the piece was taking him in a slightly different direction.
It is therefore with considerable effect that Aho unleashes his forces in the Prestissimo second movement with a vigorous brass dominated call to arms that plays an important part in the ensuing material.
Aho explains that his orchestration was conceived around a "psychological instrumentation" whereby the specific instrumentation was decided upon following careful analysis of the poems.

The leading composer of his generation in Finland, Kalevi Aho combines a personal idiom with a great knowledge, appreciation and respect for the tradition of music.
The programme features Aho’s third symphony - Sinfonia concertante for violin and orchestra with Jaakko Kuusisto, the leading Finnish violinist of his generation, as soloist.
Regarding his arrangement and orchestration of Mussorgsky's ‘Songs and Dances of Death’ Kalevi Aho speaks of a  ‘psychological instrumentation’, preserving the character of the original but giving it new nuances and emphasizing its conceptual dimensions in a manner that the piano version cannot achieve.

Classical Net Review - Aho - Symphony #9 & Cello Concerto
Aho finished his newest symphony last year, and this recording presents it with the musicians who premiered it.
Aho's instrumentation is dense and complicated; besides the cello and the main orchestra, an organ and an "anti-orchestra" (accordion, mandolin, saxophone, tuba, and side drum) also play important roles in the musical conflict.
I haven't been disappointed in Kalevi Aho yet, and this new disc is an exciting addition to his discography.

This project obviously emanated from one focused objective, and that is, from the first note composed to the last note performed, its intent was to create profoundly artistic music, whether or not it is embraced immediately by the masses.
Sonata #1 and Sonata #2 (Black Birds) by Kalevi Aho are absolutely spectacular examples of the best music that exists in contemporary accordion literature.
Even though the accordion world has its share of incredible virtuosi, the demands on the performer are so extreme in these two compositions, I had no idea that we even possessed the kind of virtuosity that exists in these two performances by Marjut Tynkkynen.

Kalevi Aho's Third Symphony foreshadows his later works that make ingenious use of various instruments in concertante form.
In the final movement the soloist comes out swinging, straining to be heard in complex double-stopped passages and careening downward motifs, but is quickly suppressed by the clangorous accompaniment of tam-tam, snare, timpani, and bass drum, whose repeated thumps morph into a march.
Aho's arrangement of Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death is a more subtle affair.

Kalevi Aho (b.1949) is a prolific Finnish composer who deserves to be better known in UK.
Aho displays a free-ranging imagination, every work of his significantly different and 'itself'.
I have reservations about Aho's orchestration of the Mussorgsky, transposed down for bass, and sometimes enriched with counter melodies and counterpoint and 'tries to avoid neutral instrumentation'.

ArkivMusic | Aho: Symphonic Dances, Symphony No 11 / Vänskä, Lahti So
I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Kalevi Aho's Symphony No. 11 (for orchestra and six percussionists) at the opening of Lahti's lovely new Sibelius Hall.
The event was great fun, but I was a bit disappointed at the work's musical content and in particular the fact that the hall had yet to be "tuned" and so percussion had a tendency to drown out the orchestra.
Aho wrote the work as the third act of Uuno Klami's unfinished ballet Whirls, having previously orchestrated Act 1 from the composer's piano score (the middle act was the only one completed by the composer before his death in 1961).

Composer Kalevi Aho has acquainted himself with Estonian music for instance at Estonian contemporary music seminars in 1995 and 1997 and observed that Estonian composers cannot be bracketed into the same categories as their Finnish colleagues.
Estonian composer Lepo Sumera noted back in the 1980s that the Estonians were in fact more advanced than the Finns: whereas Finnish composers had stagnated in their élitist and self-centred Modernism, Estonian composers had already discarded the dead styles and begun a new cycle in musical development.

Throughout, the conductor maintained a sustained sense of reserve and distance, as if we were experiencing the sun through a haze of fog, and his orchestra produced some very warm, mellow and refined playing.
The symphony reveals, through its juxtaposition of the old and new, the collapsing of time itself through the conflict of musical styles: the music of the past suddenly meets the music of the present which itself suddenly becomes the music of the past.
For Aho both the past and present become conflicting, floating fictions which are erased by time but saved by memory.

The composer is Kalevi Aho (born in 1949), from Finland, and if this photo suggests someone who might just be a bit out of the mainstream, well, then, that would be pretty accurate.
Here's a sample: "The music of Aho has been coloured at all times by the 'aesthetics of the impure' in the sense of Mahler, an example being his juxtaposition of the sublime and the trivial, the tragic and the banal..."
Well, whatever, I have to say that as otherworldly as his descritions are, Kalevi Aho is nevertheless a composer whose work I have been tragically missing all these years.

ArkivMusic | Aho: Chinese Songs, Symphony No 4 / Vahevaara, Vänskä, Et Al
Finnish composer Kalevi Aho's Fourth Symphony (1972) contains, in its three movements, elements both typical of his early work and prophetic of things to come.
The desolate finale returns to the mood of the first movement, and to another of Aho's characteristic moods: music of stillness, neither happy nor sad, but coolly mysterious, hypnotic, desolate, and almost "Eastern" in effect if not modality.
As always with BIS' recordings in its ongoing Aho cycle, the Lahti Symphony under Osmo Vänskä plays this music with the loving care that comes from close, ongoing association with the composer, and the sonics are marvelous.

Kalevi Aho (b.1949), fast becoming Finland's completor of unfinished works, writes in his notes that this is "one of the most enigmatic works of large-scale Finnish music." When I said that Klami's music is "atmospheric", I was refering to his incredible skill for creating clearly-constructed sound paintings of such nature - enigmatic.
In 1988, Kalevi Aho (an eminent composer himself) orchestrated the first act.
Aho notes that it is the most regularly played Finnish violin concerto of its period, and its formal model is actually the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

Kalevi Aho needs little introduction to people familiar with the BIS label.
Aho is unique among contemporary composers in his concern for the music of his immediate forebears and the first half of this disc consists of his homage to the composer Uno Klami (1900-1961).
He was intending to write the definitive Finnish ballet based, as one would expect, on stories from Kalevala, the great poem of Finnish mythology that has inspired so much art in Finland.
