Aklan is the oldest province in the Philippines, organized in 1213 by settler from Borneo as the Minuro it Akean to include what is now Capiz.
Aklan was formerly a part of Capiz province on the island of Panay in Western Visayas; hence, its history is often connected with that of Capiz.
Aklan is composed of 17 municipalities, the largest in land area being Libacao and the smallest, Lezo.

The term Kalibo was derived from the Aklanon word "sangka libo", that translates to "one thousand", the number of native (Ati aka aeta) people who attended the very first Catholic Mass, after which a celebration was held and is now continued as the Ati-atihan festival normally held during the 3rd week of January.
Kalibo is accessible from Manila by plane through the Kalibo National Airport, about ten minutes away from the main plaza, or by ship through the Dumaguit or New Washington Ports on the northern tip of Aklan.

He said drug testing of the local candidates, led by Calizo and Fernandez of the local party Kusog It Akean, was the first in Western Visayas, in compliance with a Comelec resolution calling for mandatory drug tests of national and local candidates.
