NUP gave its blessing for the election of Kalkot Mataskelekele in the presidential election last April and managed to convince allies in the coalition at the end of the second round.
In five different "toktok", the new head of state recalled the role of a head of state as symbol of unity, executor of various aspects of the law and constitutional law of the country, host to foreign diplomatic visitors, guest of honour at state functions and ceremonies, and holder of the integrity of the state.
Kalkot Mataskelekele is father of six children (three girls and three boys).

Kalkot Mataskelekele is the President of Vanuatu since 2004.
He is a lawyer from the national capital, Port Vila, and is the first Head of State of Vanuatu to have a university degree.
Though Kalkot was widely expected to win, there were many other candidates, and he faced tough opposition from Willie David Saul and former Prime Minister Donald Kalpokas.

It took four rounds of voting to elect Kalkot Mataskelekele on Monday night, after Friday's vote failed to agree on a candidate.
In the final round, Kalkot Mataskekelkele on 49 votes easily outvoted early round favourites David Willie Saul, with seven votes, and Donald Kalpokas and Sethy Regenavnu, each scoring one vote.
Kalkot Mataskelekele was the early favouite in the previous election, which saw former president, Alfred Maseng Nalo, disqualified when it was discovered he had a criminal record.

Mataskelekele, who was nominated by the National United Party, was elected for a five-year term as head of state after four rounds of voting Monday night, government spokesman Kalvau Moli told Kyodo News.
Mataskelekele, a former member of parliament and former Supreme Court judge, was instrumental in the drafting of Vanuatu's Constitution and he was also Vanuatu's first local solicitor general.
Last May, Mataskelekele's predecessor Alfred Maseng Nalo was removed from office by the Supreme Court following the revelation shortly after his appointment that he was serving a suspended sentence, having been convicted of misappropriation and receiving property dishonestly.

Balloting started on April 8, but this session and another session on April 10 failed to result in the required majority for any candidate.
In the fourth round of balloting on April 12, Maseng defeated the government's candidate, Kalkot Mataskelekele, by a vote of 41 to 16, and was sworn in immediately.
He was removed as president on May 11, 2004, by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the election was invalid because of a rule banning people with criminal records from being elected.

Port Vila, Vanuatu - Vanuatu's President Kalkot Mataskelekele said here on Thursday his country and Indonesia should maintain communications to break what he called the barrier of silence between the two countries due to differences in opinion in the past.
President Mataskelele also hailed the Indonesian government's invitation to visit the archipelagic country, saying that he was always open-minded for such an invitation but stressing that a prime minister's visit would be better.

Both the Electoral Office and the Police Dept. (which did the background checks on all candidates) failed to realize that the candidate who was elected, was not eligible to run.
A new election was held by the Electoral College and after several ballots over several days, Kalkot Mataskelekele, a retired local solicitor, and former judge was elected as the new head of state.
He brings an outstanding reputation to the position and is expected to be a guiding figure over the next five years.
