It is also known as 'Kallimarmaro stadio" (: good all-marble stadium).
It was used as a venue for the athletic games held during the feast of Panathenaea, hence its name Panathenaikon.

The Panathenaic stadium (in Greek: Panathinaiko stadio, meaning stadium of all the Athenians), is also known as Kallimarmaro which means "made of fine marble".
When you are in Athens and especially when you're looking for directions, never call it Olympic stadium, as people will think you are talking about the modern Olympic stadium, in the northern suburbs.
In short, call it either Panathenaic or Kallimarmaro and people will know what you are talking about.

Modern Athens is a dense sprawl of urban development that has expanded to cover the entire plain of Attica, with further expansion blocked by surrounding mountains — Mount Hymettus is seen here, east of the city - and the waters of the Saronic Gulf.
And east of the Acropolis can be seen the distinctive all-marble Panathinaiko Stadium (also known as Kallimarmaro Stadium), a reconstructed ancient stadium where the 1896 Games were held, where this year's archery events are being held, and the Olympic Marathon is finishing.
Visible down on the coast are the jetties of the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre, towards the base of the image.

For the acclaimed Athens designer has been responsible for redesigning the Olympic medals that, since 1928, have not only been symbolically incorrect but have failed to reflect the Greek origin and character of the Games.
On the flipside of the medal, Votsi chose to layer an engraving of the Olympic Flame over a line from Pindar's 8th Olympic Ode, composed in 460BC to honour the victory of Alkimedon of Aegina in an Olympic wrestling match.
While this side of the medal will be changed every four years by the host city, the side showing the Kallimarmaro and Nike will remain the same at all future Olympic Games.
