KallistiOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KallistiOS (KOS) is a free, BSD licensed development library for the Sega Dreamcast game console created by a team of free software developers over the internet.
Regardless of the fact that KallistiOS is no longer an OS at all, it was decided that the name would not be changed.
Although similar in name, the developers of KallistiOS claim no relationship to the warez group Kalisto, who became notorious for being the first group to release warez in a self-bootable format for the Dreamcast, eliminating the need for a bootdisk.

KallistiOS ('''KOS''') is a free, BSD licensed development system for the Sega Dreamcast game console created by a team of free software developers over the internet.
Although similar in name, the developers of KallistiOS claim no relationship to the warez group Kalisto who pioneered piracy of the Dreamcast by being the first group to discover how to rip Dreamcast GD-ROM games to recordable CD-Rs without the need for a bootdisk.

Both were toolkits designed to assist hobbyists and independent developers to work with the Sega Dreamcast console, but KallistiOS is now the preferred and active project, and is developed by a group of developers on the SourceForge Free Software development site.
DC Tonic has been well received and has even been reportedly mistaken for an actual commercial demo, though the developers were rushed for time in its production, and the tools used were not at a very high level of quality at the time.
Shortly thereafter, he announced that Cryptic Allusion's next commercial Dreamcast game would be an expansion of the demo game that was included on the DC Tonic demo CD, Tryptonite.

In 2000, Cryptic Allusion started the Cryptic Allusion DCDev Project, whose initial fruits of labor were libdream and KallistiOS.
Both were toolkits designed to assist hobbyists and independent developers to work with the Dreamcast(tm) console, but KallistiOS is now the preferred and active project, and is developed by a group of developers on the SourceForge Free Software development site.
Cryptic Allusion's contributor group tends to fluctuate over time (and is sparsely located, geographically), but what we all have in common is an obsession for gaming, and for the creation of games.

But with DC Tonic we announced to the scene and to the world in general that we were here to play.
DC Tonic is a compilation CD of various games, demos, and game demos produced using the KallistiOS toolkit.
It was a collaboration between Cryptic Allusion, Moving Target Software Design, GankSoft Entertainment, and AndrewK of Napalm to produce an attractive Dreamcast(tm) CD to hand out to the attendees of the 2001 Electronic Entertainment Expo(tm).

The Availability of Windows CE software development kits on the internet, as well as ports of Linux and NetBSD operating systems to the Dreamcast gave programmers a selection of familiar development tools to work with, even though they do not really support the high speed graphics.
A home brew minimal Operating System called Kallistios (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cadcdev/) offers support for most hardware, while not offering multi-tasking, which is superfluous for games.
Sega build a Arcade board based on the same technic as the Dreamcast called Sega NAOMI.

When KallistiOS copies a PNG (or PCX) over to main memory, it needs to first convert it to a format the Dreamcast's video hardware can deal with.
The PNG loader also doesn't realise that the file is already in memory.
If you're using a new-ish version of KallistiOS, you can also use romdisks instead of the ramdisk.

With spiffy 2D graphics, just a touch of 3D, music playback based on the free OggVorbis Codec, and the capability to use both a standard controller and DDR-based dance mats, we've got you covered.

- They are developed in the KallistiOS environment, which means that we do not have to pay Sega licensing fees and gives the same functionality as the actual development system, if not more because people are still developing for it.
KallistiOS actually has had some major work put into the online aspects of it, and I have been assured that online homebrew games could work.
The problem is that testing and implementation would take a long, long time and that the features would probably not be used too much.

I'm trying to get into a little console development and so I decided to buy a Sega Dreamcast because people say it's good to start with because there's loads of information and a pretty decent API (KallistiOS) available.
I had to find out that it's actually not so easy to use the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET as the development environment, which I find, kind of sucks, because you pay a lot of money for a very good piece of software and then can't use it for anything else than Win32 development.
If you already have a up-and-running Cygwin installation, that compiles the KallistiOS examples with a simple call to make, you can skip step 1) and 2).

Right now, people simply have the idea that since we have the leaked one, and it's damn good right now, that we need not make a legal devkit that won't work as well for, oh, a couple months (if there's real development, it'll happen sooner...
look at the DC scene; Kallistios and its predicessor surpassed the commercial devkits in a matter of months).
If sites refused to host news, sources, or binaries that involved releases with the leaked XDK, THEN there might be development; as we stand, however, it's in a form of statis.
