The archaeological findings and the dispersed remainings of walls, capitals, whorls, vessels, the ruins of temples, the bonfires, the objects, the coins spread over an area of 2.500 square meters are marks of the historical past and the important civilization of those two great cities that vanished during a big earthquake in 231 BC.
The plain of Kalloni is the greatest on the island, with a lot of water, rich colors, the sun that shines 3.000 hours per year, and the morning freshness, the "eersa" as the great poet Sapfo called it.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Lesvos, Greece
Like most birders we based ourselves at the small fishing town of Skala Kalloni which is ideally situated for birding a variety of habitats (including wetlands, saltpans, fields, olive groves and mountain valleys) as well as making excursions to other parts of the island.
Kalloni Pool is the main focal point of birding around the town and an excellent place to visit early morning.
At the later we found a useful vantage point from a mound located behind the petrol garage on the main road (by the junction of the entrance to the salt pans), which gave a good view of the pans in the mornings when the light is bad when viewing from the entrance road.

As Skala Kalloni school was on holiday we were able to check the trees behind the playground and obtained stunning views of roosting Scops Owl.
A last look at Kalloni Salt Pans before dinner saw the Greater Flamingos move close to the road and with the setting sun behind the light and view was spectacular.
Seen in the fields around Kalloni Salt Pans, 4 on 3rd, 3 on 4th, 1 on 7th, 1 on 8th, 1 on 10th, 2 on 14th and 2 on 15th.

We were fortunate in the week we chose, in that rain during the previous week meant that there was quite a lot of water at sites such as the East River and Kalloni Pool early in the week, with impressive numbers of herons, egrets and waders present.
The tame Skala Kalloni bird proved good value for money even if a doubtful tick, at one stage trying to feed a dog as it would a chick.
A number of birds were seen around Skala Kalloni Salt Pans and in the area between these and the East River, some of them evidently nesting.

But the legal processes that would ensure the full protection of the wetlands under Natura 2000 were not yet complete and the Municipality of Kalloni was instructed to ensure their completion as soon as possible.
The infilling by Vavoukli Brothers and Co. OE is the marsh to the right as you turn onto the saltpans road at the Kalloni Saltpans.

Following the road to Kalloni we gave the Dipi Larsos reed beds a miss and decided to go to the saltpans before going to the hotel.
We finished the day at the bandstand to the north of Kalloni where we were surprised to see a Blue Rock Thrush.
They were luckier than those who had chosen to nest at the Kalloni 2 hotel who had all their nests knocked down by the hotel.
