Kalmia is a genus of about 7 species of evergreen shrubs from 0.2-5 m tall, in the family Ericaceae.
The foliage is toxic if eaten, with sheep being particularly prone to poisoning, hence the name "lambkill" used for some of the species.
Kalmias are popular garden shrubs, grown for their decorative flowers.

Kalmia cuneata is limited to moist ecotones between streamhead pocosins (linear shrub swamps along small creeks and headwater stream branches) and longleaf pine communities in the Carolina sandhills.
Kalmia cuneata was historically known from the Sandhills region of northeastern South Carolina in Chesterfield, Darlington, and Kershaw Counties and the Sandhills region and Inner Coastal Plain of southeastern North Carolina in Bladen, Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, Pender, Richmond, and Scotland Counties (TNC 1998).

 USN Ships--USS Kalmia (AT-23)
She was assigned to icebreaking and towing duty in the St. Lawrence River during late 1919 and the first five months of 1920, then went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was her base for the next fourteen years.
Early in 1934 Kalmia was sent to the Caribbean area as part of the Special Service Squadron and, later in that year, she was transferred to the Pacific.
USS Kalmia was placed out of commission in May of that year and sold in January 1947.

The Kalmia, a screw steamer, was built as Innes at Philadelphia in 1863 and purchased for the Navy by Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding 5 October from her owner, Arron Innes, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Renamed Kalmia 24 April 1864, the Naval Register of 1865 lists her as assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron as a fourth-rate tug.
No further record of her other naval service has been found.
Kalmia was sold at public auction in New York, N.Y., 25 October 1865.
