Kalonji is particularly well known for theoretical research on the structure and properties of crystalline defects, and their influence on the physical properties of materials.
Kalonji received a Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1984, the George Westinghouse Award from the ASEE in 1994, and is a Fellow of the AAAS.

According to UC President Robert Dynes, Kalonji's hiring was part of the recruitment package offered to her partner of seven years, Denice Dee Denton, an engineer who was appointed last December as the new chancellor of UC Santa Cruz.
Kalonji is in China and could not be reached, but Denton said that Kalonji has been recognized internationally for her work in developing new approaches to teaching, particularly in international education.
