Topic: Kalpa Sutras

 [No title]
Sutra 20 clearly enounces the difference of the individual soul and the Lord; hence /S/a@nkara is obliged to remark that that difference is not real.--Adhik.
Sutras 26-28 also are interpreted in a manner not very different from /S/a@nkara's, special stress being laid on the distinction made by Scripture between knowledge as a mere quality and the soul as a knowing agent, the substratum of knowledge.
Sutras 4 and 5 (according to Ramanuja's numeration) are explained by Ramanuja very much in the same way as by /S/a@nkara; but owing to the former's statement of the subject-matter of the whole adhikara/n/a they connect themselves more intimately with the preceding Sutras than is possible on /S/a@nkara's interpretation.

Being intended for the Hotri's use, both these works treat exclusively of the hymnsand verses recited by that priest and his assistants, either in the form of connected litanies or in detached verses invoking the deities to whom oblations are made, or uttered in response to the solemn hymns chanted by the Udgatris.
It is, however, to the Brahmanas and Sutras of the Yajurveda, dealing with the ritual of the real offering-priest, the Adhvaryu, that we have to turn for a connected view of the sacrificial procedure in all its material details.
Now, in considering the body of writings connected with this Veda, we are at once confronted by the fact that there are two different schools, an older and a younger one, in which the traditional body of ritualistic matter has been treated in a very different way.

There are Sutras upon almost every subject, but “the Sutras” generally signify those which are connected with the Vedas, viz., the Kalpa Sutras, relating to ritual; the Grihya Sutras, to domestic rites; and the Samayacharika Sutras, to conventional usages.
The Kalpa Sutras, having especial reference to the Veda or Sruti, are called Srauta; the others are classed as Smarta, being derived from the Smriti.
The Sutras generally are anterior to Manu, and are probably as old as the sixth century B.C. Several have been published in the Bibliotheca Indica.

 The Kalpa of Decrease
Because it became impossible to govern the world by means of the outer classics, the Buddhist sutras were gradually introduced, and when they were used in governing, the world was restored to tranquility.
After this, because the wisdom of the Mahayana teachings in turn became inadequate, the wisdom of the sutra of the one vehicle was brought forth and used to govern the world, and for a brief period, the world was at peace.
The present age is such that neither the outer classics, the Hinayana sutras, the Mahayana sutras, nor the one vehicle of the Lotus Sutra has any effect.

Of the Sulvas so far 'uncovered' the four major and most mathematically significant are those composed by Baudhayana, Manava, Apastamba and Katyayana (perhaps least 'important' of the Sutras, by the time it was composed the Vedic religion was becoming less predominant).
However in a paper written 20 years ago S Sinha claims that there are a further three Sutras, 'composed' by Maitrayana, Varaha and Vadhula (SS1, P 76).
It is thought that the Sulvas were intended to supplement the Kalpa (the sixth Vedanga), and their primary content remained instructions for the construction of sacrificial altars.
