The Kama are Okinawan and Chinese weapons that resemble traditional farming devices similar to a small scythe or a sickle.
The sickle, implemented as a redesigned weapon form, was called a natagama.
The kama resemble another weapon familiar to the Japanese koryu, the Kusari-Gama, which had a weighted chain used to parry and club an enemy from a distance before the final Kama strike was administered.

The Kama is one of the classic "Poor Farmer's" weapons which became very common in Japan during the era of the Shogunate, a repressive feudal system which began around 1100 AD and lasted for 700 years.
The Kama is held as one might expect, with the hand near the bottom of the shaft and the blade facing outward.
The sharp edge of the Kama's blade is on the inside of the curve, so generally a cutting strike is executed by moving the blade past one's target and pulling inward.

What the Criminal Code does prohibit is chains with a blade or weight on one end (these are not kama), a throwing device with three or more sharp points, and a spring loaded baton that releases by means of a switch or button.
So far, the knives that can be opened one handed have not been declared to be under the centrifigal force prohibition by a judge and the cop who said that spydercos violated that prohibition and shut down their sales in HOV, overstepped his authority way to far and did us all a disservice.
Gusari Kama IS a chain with a blade on the end, and the spring loaded baton is what I talked about.
