  PSF: What is a Meteorite?
Iron meteorites are characterized by the presence of two nickel-iron alloy metals: kamacite and taenite.
Octahedrites, which are the most common type of iron meteorite, exhibit a unique structural feature called the Widmanstatten pattern when etched with a weak acid.
This unique crystal pattern is the result of the combination of the two nickel-iron minerals kamacite and taenite being present in approximately equal amounts.

The ubiquitous matrix kamacite grains exhibit consistently zoned edges, with the Ni content increasing from 4.4 at the rim to 6.5 - 7 % in the centres of these grains.
This compositional variation is consistent in all kamacite grains and probably represents re-equilibration during cooling from peak temperatures.
The core zone is composed of taenite grains (tetrataenite?) with an average composition of ~ 55 wt % Ni surrounded by kamacite of an average composition of 4.2 wt % Ni.

 Kamacite
It was first named in 1861 from the Greek kamask (lath or beam).
Meteoric kamacite is found in bands in octahedrites or hexahedrites, these sometimes contains Neumann[?] bands, evidence of impact, or Widmanstätten's patterns.
It is difficult to distinguish visually from the similar meteor alloy taenite and the two can be found closely intermixed as plessite.

 Iron Meteorites
Depending on the occurrence and the distribution of these nickel-iron alloys, etched iron meteorites display characteristic structures that are used to classify iron meteorites into octahedrites, hexahedrites, and ataxites.
Spaces between larger kamacite and taenite plates are often filled by a fine-grained mixture of kamacite and taenite called plessite, for the Greek word for “filling”.
Ataxites consist primarily of nickel-rich taenite, and kamacite is found only in the form of microscopic lamellae and spindles.

 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Kamacite
Franz Ernst Neumann (September 11, 1798 - May 23, 1895) was a German mineralogist, physicist and mathematician.
Kamacite contains 4 to 7.5% nickel, and it forms large crystals that appear like broad bands or beam-like structures on the etched surface of an iron meteorite.
Pure kamacite forms cubic crystals with six equal sides at right angles to each other, and hexahedrites are actually large, cubic kamacite crystals.
