I also liked the spectacular 2-page spread of Kamandi, possibly the last reasoning man on Earth, alone in a raft, paddling his way through a ravaged New York City, which for the most part was now at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
Kamandi soon learned that the tigers and gorillas were at war with one another to claim possession of a nuclear warplane housed in an underground military installation.
In the mid-1980s, Kamandi’s future storyline was erased from the DC Universe during the fallout from Crisis On Infinite Earths; he would emerge from the Command D bunker and become Tommy Tomorrow.

Kamandi #29 is more than a comic book to me. It's the key that unlocked much of the rest of my life.
Accordingly, the gorillas have organized their society into ritualized reenactments of Superman's powers; pushing giant stones, taking mighty leaps, etc. Contrivance forces Kamandi to compete against an aggressive gorilla for his life and the right to the costume.
For me it is Kamandi #16 that tells the tale of two doctors and as the cover blurb says "One of them is a gorilla."

The only issue I have is the one where Kamandi is discovered to be a descendant of OMAC.
The story opened up with Kamandi and his pals awash on a beach buttressed up against an enormous cliff-face shrouded in fog.
I read that issue and my gawd, was I floored even more with Kirby and his world of Kamandi: there were soldier gorillas with all their weapons and gear battling Tuftan and his tigers, dynamite launchers, speeding war-boats, It was amazing, exciting, and the way Kirby drew it...whew, just full of energy.
