The Basics Before the Basics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Kamae is much more that just a posture or a starting position in the performance of a waza.
Even the names of some of the kamae give this impression: Ichimonji (the figure 1, or the first kamae), Juumonji (the figure 10) In Japanese the number 10 gives a sense of completion or "having all the bases covered." There are no openings.
This kamae looks and feels awkward and confusing, but once you realize that it is simply a snap-shot of someone walking forward from Seigan no Kamae using yoko aruki suddenly it begins to make sense.

Eddie Kamae at the Elk's Club: Hana Hou! · Exploring the Culture · Oahu · Hawaiirama
We had heard a rumor that Eddie Kamae, the phenomenal Hawaiian musician who was a sidekick of Gabby Pahinui, was playing a semi-regular guest gig at the Honolulu Elks Lodge in Waikiki.
Kamae has a soulful, deep voice and a unique two-fingered ukulele picking technique that produces an waterfull of sounds far more complex than the usual chang-a-lang strumming style and more natural than the machine-gun picking style of modern uke masters like Jake Shimabukuro.
Kamae's schedule at the Elk's is irregular and its kinda loud -- the bar there is not really a family place (its not bawdy but there are certainly some serious tipplers hanging out).

While it is true that this term is generally used for all ready positions assumed prior to engaging with an opponent (kumite), it is important to understand that this position, like most other areas of the martial arts, should not be a physical position only, but must be a mental position as well.
No, this was their "Kamae" because they did not separate the act of kumite from the their normal mental state.
This is why many times their "Kamae" looks as if they are simply standing there staring into space when in fact by not appearing to be ready for action they were ready for all action and by not looking at any one thing in particular they see all things clearly.

Kamae's only subject is his subject, not a demonstration of style.
His background is in music, both in performing and preserving, which helps explain the backbone structure of his films, which are more like the arc of a sonata than the proscribed curve of traditional storytelling.
The film will be used, once again, primarily as a teaching tool, and Kamae will present the film to student groups for the rest of the school year.

But kamae are training wheels, one of the deeper 'secrets' of Okinawan martial arts is that really, there are no kamae.
Kamae, as well as stances, then, are training methhods that teach the proper 'feel' and 'range' and angles of your techniques, when the rubber meets the road you go from zero to shinken shobu instantly.Shin kun shobu?:-)
And yes, I understand that kamae are not static postures, but a "tool" that helps us to make a transition from one movement to another.
