Kameiros is an unfortified city with well planned streets, civic buildings and public water supply dating to the Hellenistic period.
Along the ridge top a long stoa faces the sea and behind this is the temple of Athena, originally Archaic, but rebuilt in the Hellenistic period.
Kameiros (together with Lindos and Ialysos) was one of the 3 city-states founded on Rhodes by Dorian Greeks, possibly as early as the Mycenaean period.
One of their sons, Kerkafos, had three children: Kameiros, Ialyssos and Lindos, who built the three largest towns on the island.
The Rhodians led by Tlepolemos, the son of Hercules, took part in the Trojan War with nine ships, but their leader was killed in battle before the walls of Troy.
From 1000 to 600 B.C. the three largest towns on the island, Kameiros, Ialyssos and, above all, Lindos founded many colonies on the shores of Asia Minor, Sicily, France and Spain.

Ancient Kameiros: This Doric city of farmers and crafts people flourished over 2,500 years ago on the west coast of Rhodes.
It is not difficult to imagine why the founders of Ancient Kameiros chose this beautiful location high on a hill above the Aegean Sea, to build their city.

Many archaeologists attribute the destruction of Mycenae, a pivotal Mycenaean city, to these invading Dorians.
Though most of the Doric invaders settled in the Peloponesse, they also settled on Rhodes and in Asia Minor, where in later times the Dorian Hexapolis (the six Dorian cities) would arise: Halicarnassus, Cos, Cnidos (Asia Minor); Lindos, Kameiros (Camiros), and Ialyssos (in Rhodes).
These six cities would later become rivals with the Ionian cities of Asia Minor.
During the city's golden era of the 6th century, it was the first Rhodian city to cut its own coins.
Kameiros has been often compared to Pompeii, something which is not correct since Kameiros did not fall into decline because of a natural disaster.
The motive to start the excavations was the accidental discovery of some ancient graves, as well as the name of the area, which was Kampeiros, and which had been reforested by the time.
