Kagoshima Prefecture corresponds to the ancient Japanese provinces Osumi and Satsuma.
This region played a key role in the Meiji restoration, and the city of Kagoshima was an important naval base during Japan's 20th Century wars and the home of admiral Togo Heihachiro.
The City of Sendai, the Towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo and the Villages of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki and Kashima were merged to form the City of Satsumasendai (Satsumasendai-Shi).

In 2005, the city had an estimated population of 103,478 in a total area of 683.50 km², giving a population density of 151.4 persons per km².
The city was established on October 12, 2004 when the city of Sendai, the towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin, Togo and Koshikijima Islands (which consisted of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki, and Kashima villages) merged to form one new city.
The city has regular Shinkansen services to Kagoshima City and Yatsushiro, Kumamoto.
