Kamiyama is located near the center of Tokushima Prefecture (a prefecture is equivalent to a state), which is in the eastern part of Shikoku Island.
Kamiyama is not only the geographical center of the prefecture, but it is also rich in culture and tradition.
Incidentally, Kamiyama means 'Gods Mountain' and Jinryo where the Town Hall is means 'the sphere of Gods', which is referred to in the oldest history book in existence in Japan, The Kojiki (712 AD).

We danced down the streets of Tokushima in the Awa Odori festival before kicking on to a temple just outside the city for a three-day English camp with local high school students.
Kamiyama means "god mountain", and it's really not hard to see why they call it that.
So we turned up in Kamiyama this past Friday evening to meet our host families, this year being the tenth in a row that they have welcomed us into their community.

The sheer scale amazed me. The building was easily the size of the huge 'entertainment centers' they have at the newer movie theaters.
Naruto is a smaller city at the North-East tip of Tokushima prefecture, and the gateway over to the main island of Honshu.
It's one of the tourist attractions of Tokushima, primarily for it's impressive bridge and the huge whilrpools that form in the straights.

The Kamiyama Artist in Residence (KAIR) Program is an independent project organized by volunteers who share the desire to develop art and culture in Kamiyama and was established in 1999 to invite and provide artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, communal environment.
The hope is that the artists will produce works full of originality, influenced by the experience of spending time amidst the timeless nature of Kamiyama, deep in the Japanese countryside, and inspiration from interacting with the friendly local people.
Through the works created by the artists as they come into contact with the tangible and intangible Gods Mountain (the meaning of Kamiyama), the organization hopes to be able to discover what impact encounters with the unknown have upon the artists and the community itself.

Aargaard's pieces are titled "Come Together Kamiyama October 2001" and "From House Within." The latter piece is a large installation suspended two feet from the ground hinting of a traditional Japanese home.
At first glance one might think Kamiyama is just a farming community, but after spending some time here, I have found that this is a community filled with talented craftsmen and artists.
There are amazing waterfalls, rivers to fish and swim in, mountains, hiking, camping, temples, shrines, and even an onsen, but for me, it was the artist in residence program that put this town on the map.

Trips to Kamiyama always result in lots of mountain pictures.
JAM camp was put together by Angie (an ALT) and some musicians from the US and Canada, and it came to Kamiyama.
The musicians worked with the kids on music and expressing themselves with music, which is something Japanese kids desperately need.

Talk-Up Tokushima FM Tokushima's weekly broadcast of community events in English, has now moved from Tuesday mornings at 9:45am, to Thursday mornings at 9:15am.
The Kamiyama Artist in Residence will be held this year from September 30 - November 10.
Despite the whirlwind schedule of waterfall-scaling, onsens, and barbecuing, I had plenty of time to be impressed by the devotion of residents to the preservation of their local culture as well as their openness towards outsiders.

 When we got to Kamiyama, we discovered that the way that they make towns isn't by having any large population in one place, but by amalgamating many tiny communities.
The atmosphere in the town of Kamiyama quickly grew on us, however, and Julia had no problem falling in love with the burgeoning art community there.

I spent last weekend in Kamiyama (The most avid of readers will remember that Kamiyama is the small town where I had my home stay in August 04).
Several weeks ago, I spent the afternoon at an oyster party in Naruto with the same family who invited me to Kamiyama.
I am always amazed at the incredible kindness showed towards me. Virtual strangers are always treating me as though I am a member of their family*.
