 Soviet and Russian Helicopters
Nikolai Ilyich Kamov was born in 1902 in Irkutsk, Siberia.
All of Kamov's helicopters, except for one, used this same configuration with one rotor mounted atop the other and were popular with the Soviet Navy, primarily because they took up less space on a ship than a more conventional design.
During the mid 1990s, Kamov built the Ka-50 Werewolf attack helicopter, which was the first Kamov helicopter developed for this role.

 Kamov Ka-25
History: The Kamov Ka-25 was built in large numbers for the Soviet navy and export customers as a ship based ASW and utility helicopter, but it is progressively being replaced by the Ka-32.
The most prominent design feature of the Ka-25 is Kamov's trademark counter rotating coaxial main rotors, which do away with the need for a tail rotor, and means the tail can be kept short and thus saving space, an important consideration for naval operations.
In response Kamov developed the Ka-20 which flew for the first time during 1960.

 POLYGON-PRESS!
As the 1960s drew to a close, the need arose for a new shipboard anti-submarine warfare helicopter to replace the Soviet Navy's main ASW chopper, the Kamov Ka-25 which was becoming obsolescent.
For many years the Kamov OKB, which until then had specialised in naval and utility helicopters, had stuck to an unconventional layout with contra-rotating rotors.
Eventually the contra-rotating Kamov was declared the winner in 1995 and ordered into production as the Ka-50 (popularly known as the Black Shark).
