Topic: Kampilan

Deluxe Martial Arts Forums - Inayan Largo Mano question
Related to the parang the kampilan blade is quickly identified by its distinctive taper, narrow at the forte, and gradually swelling in width to the tip, giving the blade profile an almost trapezoidal appearance.
It is speculated that these kampilans are perhaps early attempts at creating tourist blades, as the intricate engraving would not be typically be visible as status markers, as it would be a severe cultural faux paux to bare an un-sheathed blade in court, or generally in a non-war related situation.
Kampilan hilts were made of various native hardwoods such as kamagong (Philippine Ebony), but some extremely high end kampilan hilts were completely silver plated, or made of such rare materials such as ivory or bone.

Probably one of the most essential units of the UP Manila ROTC is the Kampilan Battle Group (KBG), a unit which focuses on battle strategies and combat essentials – contrary to the Rayadillo Honor Guards which focuses on silent drills and marchings for parades and welcome ceremonies.
Several activities have been culminated by the Kampilan Battle Group for the academic year 2000-2001, like the Markahan 2001, held last December 2000, Alay-Lakad held last August 2000, and the Presentation of Sponsors, which was just held recently.
However, being a Kampilan member will always be in their hearts, a pride brought about by experiences and camaraderie among fellow cadets and officers.

Kampilan advice (and more general collecting advice) - vikingsword.com forums
The kampilan is a long sword primarily associated with the Muslims of southern Mindanao (Iranun and Maguindanao Moros), though variants exist in the Sulu Archipelago, Sabah, and Timor.
For a sword such as a wood-hilted kampilan to survive from 500 years ago, it would've had to have been re-hilted several times, so even in the unlikely case that the blade is that old, the hilt couldn't be more than about 100.
Anyways, I know that some go by how lavish the kampilan is. The logic is that the Sultanates of Mindanao were in a state of decline by the time of the US arrival, and therefore lavish spending on campaign weapons could not be made.

Some kampilan blades sport a spikelt at the tip, but it must be noted that not all kampilan have this spikelet.
Some say that the spikelet is purely ceremonial/decorative, but others assert that it serves as a key distraction when blocking an enemy blow thereby allowing an effective un-impeded counter cut.
The hilt form is extended as a counter balance and is generally bifurcated in what some say is symbolic of the open jaws of a crocodile while others assert that it is representative of the tail of the swiftlet (a bird common to the area).

The kampilans are one of the weapons found both in the Philippines and in Indonesia, most famous to the general public for its use by the "Sea Dayaks" or pirates.
It is unusual to see such ornamentation on kampilan, perhaps because these were exclusively weapons and were not worn for display (although some dignitaries did have large, unusual examples carried by attendants as a symbol of rank or power).
The Kampilan is claimed (in a similar fashion to the barong being claimed by Tausug) by some Mindanao groups as a national weapon (Im sorry cant remember which group).

As an weapon of execution, like the kampilan, the panabas also came to represent a Datu/Ruler's power/prestige in relation to his ability to control violence.
Also, like the kampilan, the panabas was not a weapon of common carry, but rather a weapon devoted either to court/ceremony/execution, or the campaign.
It is sometimes said that the warriors wielding the panabas would follow the main group of warriors, summarily mopping up any survivors of the first wave of attack.

If the kampilan is genuinely date-able via the coin, then there's a fair chance it saw some form of action against either the Spaniards or (more likely) American troops at the turn of the century, and wound up being carted off as a personal war trophy.
