The plan is to ride from Phnom Penh to Kampong Thom today and meet up with Vothear and Sokhom, two friends of mine who are excellent guides for exploring the temples in Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear and Siem Reap.
I have been to Kampong Thom many times but until recently was not aware that there are countless temples to visit along the way, in particular between Kampong Thom town and Skuon (Skon).

When I was last in Kampong Chhnang over 5 years ago, that entire region across the Tonle Sap was Khmer Rouge territory and a no-go zone for foreigners, but I thought that now it might be possible to go to Kampong Thom cross-country.
This is the mountain you passed on the road from Kampong Thom.
At the taxi stand in Kampong Thom we were told that it is possible to travel by road to Stung Treng, but that no taxis or public pickups ply that route.

EU ASAC is pleased to announce that the 30th Flame of Peace ceremony in Cambodia, at which 4,426 surplus military weapons will be destroyed, is to be held in Kampong Thom at 08.30 hours on Tuesday, 13 July 2004.
Kampong Thom is one of the provinces comprising this military region and the 4,426 weapons to be destroyed were classified as surplus weapons during the project.
In addition, in four provinces (Battambang, Pailin, Pursat and Kampong Thom), EU ASAC is assisting the Ministry of the Interior in setting up projects to train Commune Councils to take responsibility for weapons security as part of their regular tasks.

 Disarmament and Demobilization
The Council for Demobilization of Armed Forces (CDAF), the governmental body responsible for demobilization in Cambodia, began implementation with a pilot demobilization project in the provinces of Kampot, Kampong Thom, Banteay Meanchey and Battambang.
From 15 October to 26 December, 2001, 15,000 ex-combatant soldiers were demobilized in ten provinces: Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu, Kampot, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom and Steung Treng.
Upon invitation from the CDAF Secretariat, eight NGOs observed the general process of demobilization, conducted interviews with demobilized soldiers, and provided awareness-raising presentations on issues related to small arms and light weapons.

In the provinces of Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham, where economic and tourist activities are increasing and the people are attracted to these opportunities, the UXO incidents have increased since 2000.
The number of UXO casualties in the other four provinces remains low compared to Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham, but with the construction of highways linking the provinces it is expected the number will rise when economic activities start to increase, which will attract more people to settle in the areas.
