From Phnom Penh I caught a crowded minibus south, to the sleepy town of Kampot.
Kampot is on the tourist trail insofar as it is a basse for visiting the nearby abandonned hill station of Bokor, but I (like many others) found I enjoyed the relaxed, small-town pace of life, and super freindly people.
I stayed at Blissful Guest House, which I could highly recommend to anyone heading to the area; it is the kind of place where you feel at home as soon as you arrive.

Still in Kampot, we stop at the petrol station to fill up the bikes for the trip.

There has been a sea change in Kampot accommodation recently with the opening of Blissful Guesthouse, located near the Acleda Bank; the first western-run place for those on more of a budget, they offer a neat compound-based atmosphere with ensuite rooms around $4 down to dorm beds at $2.
For non-Chinese/Khmer food, Kampot has progressed leaps and bounds since the old days when you used to walk to school barefoot three miles in the snow uphill both ways just to get a $6 plate of undercooked pasta at the Marco Polo...
Bamboo Light Cafe, which was originally based in Sihanoukville, has opened a branch in Kampot as well with a completely different atmosphere – more formal dining exists in the front room, while there is a backroom bar and an upstairs chillout area and balcony that, again, looks over the river.

This is the residence for two priests, the offices for the church in Kampot, and a chapel for 15-20 persons, enough to accommodate the local Catholics for mass on Sundays.
The church's house in Kampot doesn't look that big from the outside, but the upstairs is a large meeting room that is quite comfortable for a group our size, about 20 priests for this gathering.
Many of the Phnom Penh priests had not been to Kampot, four hours drive to the south of Phnom Penh, so for lunch we went about ten miles farther along the coast to Kep, a backpacker-type tourist destination where we ate in a local eatery right on the beach.

When we arrived at the market next morning it was a maelstrom of dust and commotion as stall-holders set up for the day and prospective passengers wove in and out of a staggering array of vehicles, trying to arrange their passage to various far flung destinations around the country.
No brakes were necessary and a honk on the horn made no difference to either the driver or the intended recipient of the warning blast as we careered down the road.
Back in Kampot, we had a last wander round the streets, taking photos of the French houses that weren’t falling to bits and sitting near a grassy area where a football match was taking place.

Arriving at Kampot market just before 10am, we dropped off a couple of passengers and Socheat drove me around the corner to the hotel of my choice, the Borey Bokor, where I booked in (as the hotel's only guest) and jumped in the shower.
The trip back along Route 33 towards Kampot was quick and easy on our motorbike, sharing the road with hordes of teenage schoolchildren, cycling home at the end of their schoolday.
We reached Kampot by 5pm and Phalla toured around the town, which branches out from a central circle, where the older hotels and shops are to be found.

Kampot is the former port of entrance for the Kingdom of Cambodia, dating back to the good ol' days when flat-bottomed sampans cruising up from Singapore would dock along the Teuk Chhou estuary.
Lots and lots of the mandatory Chinese traders followed, followed by the mandatory French, and they all built buildings in their respective vernacular styles, meaning that the entirety of the downtown is a melange between the classic European colonial and Asian mercantile, circa last century.
I think that the scenery around Kampot is just some of the most sublimely jaw-dropping that I've witnessed.

This province, near the Vietnamese border, is the epicenter of H5N1 avian influenza in Cambodia, with all 4 known human cases of the disease.
