The state of the art may have changed since the publication date.
KAMWENGE district has received a sh109m grant from the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in the district.
The fund to be managed by Kamwenge Developm-ent Agency (KADA) will sensitise people on the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

 New Vision Online : Tsetse flies invade Kamwenge district
KAMWENGE District has been hit by a drastic increase in the number of tsetse flies, exposing both humans and livestock to the dangers of sleeping sickness and nagana respectively.
The District Entomologist, Geoffrey Tumwesigye, said last week that the number of tsetse flies in Kamwenge have equalled the record of the 1960s when the Government had to come up with a massive spraying exercise.
Tumwesigye attributed the increase in the number of tsetse flies to the fact that after the implementation of the decentralisation programme, the central government left tsetse control to the local governments, which hardly have any money for that activity.

Museveni contributed Shs 10 million in cash and when no one came forward to buy the two cows he was auctioning, apart from his wife, Janet who offered Shs 1 million, he bought them and ceremoniously donated them to her.
Museveni told the crowd that now that he is out of the army, he would return to Kamwenge at the beginning of May to address the district’s conference as well as carry out kakuyege (house-to-house political mobilisation) to sweep “dust” (political opposition) from the area.

 AEGiS-NV: Instant HIV/Aids Testing Soon, Says Muhwezi
He was on Wednesday reacting to concerns by MPs during a debate of a report of the standing committee on HIV/AIDS.
Members of Parliament from Kanungu, Kalangala and Kamwenge districts said they did not have testing centres.
Muhwezi said, "We are in the process of procuring equipment to test AIDS in 10 seconds." he said.

 UNICEF - Press centre - Uganda expands life-saving tetanus immunizations
KAMPALA, 10 November 2005 — UNICEF in Uganda today announced its support for an expanded campaign to immunize thousands of children and women against the threat of tetanus, with vaccinations being completed in nine, high-risk districts throughout this month.
The immunizations, organised by the Ministry of Health with the support of UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA and various NGO implementing partners, have taken and will take place in Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kamwenge, Kapchorwa, Kasese, Kiboga, Masaka, Pallisa and Sembabule Districts to reach more than 850,000 girls and women of childbearing age (13-49 years).
The campaign in Masaka and Pallisa is being conducted between today and 13 November; and in Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kamwenge, Kasese, Kiboga and Sembabule during 24-27 November.

Once a famed stop centre for the powered Uganda railways as it picked the copper, cotton and coffee among other produces from Western Uganda in the 1960s and 70s, Kamwenge is now a metropolitic of the Batagwenda, Batooro, Bakiga and Bafumbira.

It borders the districts of Bundibugyo in the west and north, Kasese and Kamwenge in the south and Kyenjojo in the east.

Martin Owuor, Assistant Commissioner in the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, within OPM, told IRIN on Monday that his office was about to complete the demarcation of a government-owned parcel of land for the Kikagati returnees, in neighbouring Kamwenge District.
The people involved are part of a group of 3,027 Ugandans, mainly ethnic Bakiga cattle herders, expelled from Tanzania - allegedly for voting against Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in elections in October 2000, according to media reports in January.
Under the planned allocation at Kamwenge, a plot is to be given to each of the returnee families, soon after a meeting with humanitarian agencies scheduled for Thursday 21 March, which should complete logistical arrangements to that effect, according to Owuor.

My grandfather the late Katondo being one of the chiefs in Ntarabana - Kabale shifted with one of the groups that settled in Bigodi Parish, Kahunge Sub - county, Kibale county of the now Kamwenge District where I was born.
These leaders threatened to start genocide if Kamwenge was granted a district status.
Threats were extended to some of us but we did not give up until we were granted the Kamwenge District status in November 2000.

All IDPs expressed in the most emphatic terms their desire to see the villages dismantled and for conditions to change to allow a quick return to their place of permanent residence.

SIR — I am disappointed by the way the police in Kamwenge tolerate the behaviour of bus operators in the area.
For example, they block entrances to the bus and taxi park, drive recklessly in town in the middle of the night hooting loudly and unnecessarily.
Is it possible that the Police in Kamwenge are not aware of this criminal behaviour?

Currently it has dwindled off because the school schedules are so different, the length of time it takes to get letters back and forth, and the limited number of teachers at Kamwenge to help with the project.
We are hoping that this program can carry over from year to year at least with the boarding students.
Most of the students at Kamwenge school are orphans.

In Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Kamwenge and Bundibugyo districts, a heavy morning downpour disrupted the exercise.
The presiding officer at Kyasigireki polling station in Kyankwanzi Sub-county, Mwenge in Kyenjojo district said 74 out of the expected 700 voters had cast their votes by 10 a.m.
The Assistant Returning Officer for Kamwenge district, Mr John Patrick Nuwagaba, said the turnout at most polling stations in the district was encouraging despite the heavy downpour.

Buhanga hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in the country, having been started by the early missionaries around 1930.
It is a referral hospital serving five districts including Kasese, Bundibugyo, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo and Kabarole.
It has a staff of 151, with 67 enrolled nurses, three medical officers and two specialists.

Here, a group of Ugandan displaced - originally expelled from Tanzania - who arrived overnight on 6 May is starting to gather around several aid workers who are distributing clothes, food, hoes and domestic implements.
In late March, Martin Owuor, Assistant Commissioner in the Department of Disaster Preparedness, told IRIN that a plan had been finalised to transfer the Kikagati returnees to a new site in Kamwenge District, starting on 8 April.
