The scales are constructed as follows: out of the twelve semitones of the octave S, R1, R2=G1, R3=G2, G3, M1, M2, P, D1, D2=N1, D3=N2, N3, a melakarta raga must have necessarily have S and P, one of the M's, two of the R's and G's, and two of the D's and N's.
A raga which has the same scale as a Melakarta raga (or a subset thereof) is said to be a janya of it (janya means born or derived from).
Ragas whose notes are found in more than one melakarta raga are assigned janyas based on subjective notions of similarity.

Is there any need for all the links to ragas to have "(raga)" in their title, such as Kanakanki (raga)?
If these names are only used for ragas (as I suspect they are), then simply Kanakanki will do.
I generated that list with a script, so I put a "(raga)" suffix just to be sure.

He chooses the Ragams in the Raga Malika to be widely apart, instead of being only subtely different.
The grand finale is when he breaks into a long series of Swarams (typically in the reverse order of the Raga Malika Ragams) and finally landing on the initial Ragam he had set out to play - (Shankarabharanam).
For example, he called the first Melakarta as Kanakambari whereas it is called Kanakanki at present.

There is a character, a structure and an identity to the song, however vague the concept may sound.
For example, if you heard the song 'Vande maataram, Shujalaam shuphalaam...' you can tell that it has its own identity, which is different from the way 'Jana gana mana..' or 'Roop tera mastana..' sound.
Alapanai is sometimes simply called 'Ragam' singing or 'Raga Alapanai'.

After a flawless rendition of Shrigananatham in Kanakanki, the brothers sang Bhajanaseyu marga in Narayani, a kriti one seldom hears.
The singers took the time to explore the finer aspects of the Raga and brought out the tranquil, listen-in-the-dark mood of Keeravani.
Violinist Nagai Shriram, who had been proving to be a worthy accompanist through and through, outdid himself during the pallavi ragamalika section (Durga, Desh and Chandrakauns).
