Nagachika served Nobunaga and fought at Nagashino (1575) and a number of other battles.
Following Nobunaga's death in 1582, Nagachika at first sided with Shibata Katsuie, then gave his loyalty to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
In 1585 he was dispatched to destroy the Anegakoji of Hida province and was afterwards given their castle of Takayama.

Kanamori Nagachika was born in 1524 in Tajimi, Mino.
Nagachika served Nobunaga for the four decades from when Nobunaga was eight years old to the warlords seppuku at Honno-ji temple at the age of forty-nine.
Nagachika learned the art of the tea ceremony from Rikyu and Furuta Oribe, and Arishige was also a pupil of Rikyu and served as the tea ceremony instructor for the shogun Hidetada (Ieyasu's son).

When Nagachika reached Takayama, he ordered a new castle to be built and constructed in addition to samurai quarters, a town residents quarter that was actually 1.2 times larger than the area designated for samurai.
Nagachika, a deep admirer of Kyoto, built a number of temples on the hilly slopes of Mt.Shiroyama, as he compared the similarities of the scene evoked by Takayama's Miya River and the Kamo River in Kyoto.
Nagachika also encouraged the production of hand-made Japanese paper, and the Edo Period row houses (udatsu) that were home to the paper merchants testify to the prosperity of the Minowashi dealers.

Under the rule of the Kanamori family, whose government lasted for six generations over 107 years, the foundation of Takayama was formed by placing the political, economical, and cultural systems in order, and the city was developed as the administrative center for the large Hida area.
Kanamori were a culturally-minded family who encouraged the local artisans and craftsmen to develop their skills to their fullest potential.
The effects of Kanamori patronage can still be seen today, as Hida arts and crafts, both the old and the new, receive acclaim here in Japan and from abroad.

 Kanamori Nagachika
Nagachika's father, Tadachika, had been part of the Toki clan of Mino, but had separated from them and moved to Kanamori, where he took the toponym as his new family name.
He dug the River Miyagawa to resemble the Kamo in Kyoto, and altered Mt Nishiki in the East of the Takayama plain to resemble Higashiyama (literally 'eastern mountain') in Kyoto.
Nagachika studied tea under Rikyu and Oribe, and on many occasions invited Hideyoshi and Ieyasu to his villas in Kyoto and Fushimi for tea gatherings.

Myself killing 6, the victory of Hojo was obtained with a total of 1100 corpses laid on the ground of Kawachi.
Oda's fine generals, Kanamori Nagachika (R3) and Akechi Mitsuhide (R2), were all killed in this battle.

 Hidatakayama
The lattice work, a characteristic of Takayama houses and influenced by Kyoto, is especially famous, giving a sense of lightness and brightness to contrast with the massive beams and thick walls of the main structure.
Once the seat of local government when Takayama was under the administration of the Kanamori clan, this is the only building of its kind in Japan.

After Takayama became under the direct control of the Tokugawa Government in 1695, the Edo (present Tokyo) culture was introduced to the Kyoto style culture, and both cultures beautifully merged into the present unique culture of Takayama.
