To the west, its border with British Columbia follows the line of peaks of the Rocky Mountains range along the Continental Divide, which runs northwesterly until it reaches 120° W, at which point the border follows this meridian to 60°N. With the exception of the southeastern section, the province is well watered.
The elevation ranges from about 1000 metres in the south (Calgary is about 1000-1200 metres and Red Deer is about 850 metres) to 650 metres in the north.
In the summer, the average temperatures range from 13°C (55°F) in the Rocky Mountains to 19°C (67°F) in the dry prairie to the southeast.

The younger ranges of the Rocky Mountains uplifted during the late Cretaceous period (140 million-65 million years ago), although some portions of the southern mountains date from uplifts during the Precambrian (3,980 million-600 million years ago).
The mountains' geology is a complex of igneous and metamorphic rock; younger sedimentary rock occurs along the margins of the southern Rocky Mountains, and volcanic rock from the Tertiary (65 million-1.8 million years ago) occurs in the San Juan Mountains and in other areas.
The Tetons and other north-central ranges are magnificent granitic intrusions of folded and faulted rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age (Peterson 1986; Knight 1994).

 Nordegg Historical Society Home Page
Coal holdings were amalgamated in order to create a coal mining empire to funnel coal onto the Canadian prairies.
The town of Nordegg was to be headquarters for this coal empire.
Other representative items along the bottom of the mural represent a wide range of Nordegg-based structures and activities, ranging from Martin Nordegg's riding into the area in 1911, to the 'Man-Car' form of transportation which took the miners underground.
