Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is situated in the North-Western part of the town along Saeng Chuto Road.
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is only a short distance from the site of the former 'Kanburi', the prisoner of war base camp through which most of the prisoners passed on their way to other camps.
Within the entrance building to the cemetery will be found the Kanchanaburi Memorial, recording the names of 11 men of the army of undivided India buried in Muslim cemeteries in Thailand, where their graves could not be maintained.

There are more than 7600 graves in Kanchanaburi cemetery, of these 138 are unknown, 248 killed by British bombers on the 24th June 1944 who were intent on bombing the bridges, and a further 142 killed on June 25th 1945 when the marshalling yards were bombed.
Kanchanaburi was the main supply store for all goods and materials being dispatched to the Burma front.
There is also a memorial containing the ashes of 335 soldiers sailors and airmen of the British Commonwealth whose names are inscribed on a plaque, except for 51 cremations not identified.

The purpose of the project is to honor the Allied POW and Asian conscripts who died while constructing some of the most difficult stretches of the Burma-Thailand death railway, 80km northwest of Kanchanaburi.
The memorial consist of a trail that follows the railway remains through the 110m Konyu cutting, then winds up and around the pass for an overhead view.
At the far end of the cutting is a memorial plaque fasten to solid stone, commemorating the death of the Allied prisoners.

The only other possibility that comes to mind is to sweep through Kanchanaburi Province late some night with a paint brush and change all the signs to read Khwae instead of Kwai, but, of course that would be a tourist disaster.
It was ironic that my visit to the World War II museums in Kanchanaburi, including the excellent Hellfire Pass Memorial, just happened to correspond with the violent protests by students throughout China over Japan's failure to own up to its atrocities during WW II.
War memorials, however well conceived and executed can't really put us in the place or the time they memorialise.

The object is to provide a center in Kanchanaburi that is part museum and part information and research facility, but devoted entirely to the Thailand-Burma Railway.
The Museum part of the Centre guides visitors from a gallery devoted to the historical background and the reasons behind the construction of the Railway to one devoted to the engineering aspects, the way in which it was built and the difficulties that had to be overcome.
This is a wonderful facility which, in addition to the Museum at Hell Fire Pass, 80km north, enhances visitors understanding of conditions on the line and the terrible treatment of the Prisoners of War.
