	Kandhamal
		The ancient history of Kandhamal district may be traced back to the 3rd Century B.C. It finds mention as an unconquered Atavika country fields in the Kalinga Rock Edicts of the legendary Mauryan Emperor, Ashok.
		Some historians are of the view that Mahakantar subdued by the Gupta Emperor, Samudragupta, in the 4th century A.D., during his Dakshinapatha Campaign, included Kandhamal area and he led his victorious army to the south from Kosala and Kural through this district.
		The present Kandhamal district is made up with some segments of three erstwhile principalities of Boudh, Ghumsar and Khemundi, reigned by the Bhanjas and the Gangas from ancient times.

		Tension gripped Jarginaju village under Raikia block of Kandhamal district in Orissa after a newly built church was vandalised by some miscreants on Sunday night, police said.
		Police have registered a case under sections 295, 379 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the incident.

		Expressing serious concern over the series of attacks on the community and their places of worship in four districts of the state, particularly in the tribal-dominated Kandhamal district, Archbishop Raphael Cheenath of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Catholic diocese and Ranjit Pradhan, president of the AOUCF, castigated the Orissa government for being anti-minority.

	The Hindu : Orissa Govt. told to pay relief to detained boy
		The State Government was asked to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kandhamal, Phulbani, for his ``total lack of sensitivity towards human rights problems'', the NHRC sources said today.
		It was alleged that he was abused and beaten up, they said, adding that he was also made to make false confessions and even after being produced in the court, he was not sent to a juvenile home but to a regular prison.
		Following a notice issued by the NHRC, the SP of Kandhamal sent a report stating that the complainant and another person were arrested on charges of theft and smuggling of gemstones.

	Two arrested for hemp cultivation
		Lisban Kahar, chief of Sarangia village council, and Kittu Gaur, who heads the Lendriya village council, were taken into custody for allegedly cultivating the hemp plants, said a police official.
		About 100 officials of the police and excise department raided the hemp cultivation Thursday, some 40 km from Kandhamal town.
		The plants were spread over seven kilometres inside the forest.
