The median income for a household in the county is $59,351, and the median income for a family is $66,558.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 142,990; in 2003, a special census found the city's population to be 157,267, making it the second-largest city in Illinois.

While the city has traditionally been considered as being in Kane County, Illinois (and in fact its downtown is still entirely in that county), Aurora is one of only two cities in Illinois where the city limits actually cover parts of four counties: Kane, Kendall County, Illinois, Will County, Illinois and DuPage County, Illinois.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) records of serious leachate problems on the southern and southwestern slopes of the Tri-County Landfill exist back to only July 5, 1973; however, complaints of leachate date from 1971.
From the time it was begun in 1961 until 1974, when the landfill was closed, it was run under Kane County permit by the Elgin Landfill Company, a subsidiary of Browning-Ferris Industries of Illinois, Inc (WW Engineering and Science, 1991a).
Rural land in Kane County is rapidly being developed for single family homes, and many of these are quite large.
