On June 6, 2005 the town of Taro and village of Niisato from Shimohei District merged with the former city of Miyako to create the new city of Miyako.
On September 20, 2005, the new city of Ichiniseki was created out from the former city of Ichinoseki and the municipalities of Daito, Higashiyama, Senmaya, Kawasaki, Murone (first 5 municipalities are from Higashiiwai District), and Hanaizumi from Nishiiwai District.
On February 20, 2006 the cities of Esashi and Mizusawa and the municipaltites of Maesawa, Isawa and Koromogawa from Isawa District merged to form the new city of Ōshū.

The House of Representatives seat in the Kumamoto No. 3 district became vacant after Toshikatsu Matsuoka, a ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker, committed suicide in May when he was farm minister amid a political funds scandal.
The two other candidates are Hidetomo Goto, 40, deputy chief of the Kumamoto chapter of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, who is also the recommended candidate of the People's New Party, and Toru Matsuoka, a 62-year-old local assembly member, fielded by the Japanese Communist Party.
The seat in the Iwate No. 1 district became vacant after Takuya Tasso of the DPJ quit to run for the gubernatorial election in the prefecture in April.

This area, recorded as Hitakami-no-kuni or Isawa in some authentic histories like Nihon-shoki (The Chronicle of Japan), was known as a land of very rich field and water along the Hitakami River (now the Kitakami River) surrounding the Ou Mountain Chains in the west and the Hitakami Mountains in the east.
During the early seventeenth century, Juan Goto (?1577-?1638), born as Matagoro (as called in his childhood), the third son of Hidenobu Iwabuchi, the lord of Fujisawa-jo Castle, Higashi-Iwai County, Iwate, was the Christian lord of Fukuwara (literally "God-blessed field") in the western part of Mizusawa.
It was founded by Rev. Shuchu (@’†˜a®) in 1607 (12th year of Keicho) in Hataori-yama, Ichinoseki, Iwate in the time of the first Mizusawa-Date lord Munetoshi.
