Galileo Project: This Week on Galileo
PST, a scant 15 minutes past closest approach, the distance to the tholi region has increased to 8,300 kilometers (5160 miles), and SSI provides wider-angle views of the region to supply broader context for the high-resolution pictures taken earlier.
This is followed by broader context pictures of the Mbali and Kanehekili locations as well, with the Mbali pictures taken in color.
PST a strip of images ranging from far southern latitudes to just south of the equator stretches across the surface, capturing the Masubi and Kanehekili regions, as well as another hot spot that has shown some dramatic changes in appearance in the past.

 Ground-Based Images
Four real sources are visible - the bright transient 9608A in the center, Kanehekili to the left and slightly down, a (presumably transient) source above Kanehekili, and a dim (K'=14.1) source near the east limb.
The brightest is Loki (on the right), the leftmost, faintest, one is probably Kanehekili, and the lowermost one is unnamed.
Europa (top) is in full sunlight but is extremely dark at these wavelengths due to absorption of the sunlight by water ice, especially beyond 3 microns, so it is much bluer than Io, and no brighter.

The other active regions corresponds to various known calderas on Io except for one region that is still unamed.

  Io During 1999
The first is presumably Kanehekili (marked by the square) while the second is consistent with Spencer's position for 9906A, marked by the cross.
Kanehekili continues to be active, as well as a source which disappears approximately 15 seconds before Loki.
Note that in producing these limb plots I have used the "known" location of the Loki brightening to correct the somewhat uncertain ephemeris by 10 seconds.

The last of the late-event sources is marginally consistent with Loki, given uncertainties in the fit and the ephemeris.
The eclipse photometry presented in the table at the top of the page shows that the 3.8 and 4.7 micron flux also continues to increase.
Some combination of source B and C is probably Kanehekili, marked by the small square on the globe.

 Catalog Page for PIA01220
This color composite of Io, acquired by Galileo during its ninth orbit (C9) of Jupiter, shows the hemisphere of Io which is centered at longitude 52 degrees.
The dark feature just to the lower right of the center of the disk is called Kanehekili.
Named after an Hawaiian thunder god, Kanehekili contains two persistent high temperature hot spots and a "new" active volcanic plume.

By combining observations of the same features taken by different instruments whose strengths lie in different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, scientists can extend their knowledge of the body past mere form, and can deduce detailed structure, texture, temperature, and composition of the surface.
This is followed by broader context pictures of the Mbali and Kanehekili locations as well, with the Mbali pictures taken in color.

Keep Galileo's Eyes Open, Say Petitioning Scientists
The only images of this hemisphere returned from Galileo so far have been at low resolution, taken at very long range during the orbital tour - show several gigantic volcanoes and still-hot lava fields of varying composition.
If funds are reinstated, Galileo will image the mountains Hi'iaka, Gish Bar, and Pan, a pair of enigmatic lava domes named Apis and Inachus Tholi, and the volcanoes Kanehekili and Mbali.
Galileo will also measure the temperature of the volcanoes Kanehekili, Prometheus, Marduk, and Pillan and search for hot spots, which provide clues to the way Io dissipates its tidal heat.

The eclipse images have also proven to be the best way to discover and monitor lava temperatures, and almost invisible interactions between Io's volcanos, Io's atmosphere and Jupiter's magnetosphere.
The final camera observation is designed to monitor the volcanic activity of the Kanehekili plume.
This plume was discovered to be active during Galileo's primary mission in May 1997.

There is also very persistent emission from Kanehekili (33 W, 15 S), though from the ground Kanehekili is often difficult to distinguish from Janus (38 W, 15 N).
Monitoring is not continuous, so there are almost certainly several major events that have been missed, and the given durations for the various events are simply the range of dates when the events were seen: many may have lasted longer.

Each hot spot falls precisely on discrete, widely-spaced, low- albedo features which correspond to caldera floors and/or lava flows.
The hot-spot temperatures must exceed temperatures of 700 K for detection by SSI, and the most intense features (Pele, Kanehekili, and a caldera in Media Regio) must exceed 800 K. Hot-spot observations at longer wavelengths require that most of these hot spots actually have significantly higher temperatures and cover small areas.
The high-temperature hot spots probably mark the locations of active silicate volcanism, supporting suggestions that the eruption and near-surface movement of silicate magma drives the heat flow and resurfacing of Io.
