The Mohawk community of Kanesatake is located on the north shore of the lac des Deux Montagnes, where it meets the Ottawa River, 53 km west of Montreal.
The Mohawk Council of Kanesatake, elected for a three-year period, is composed of 7 members, of which one Grand Chief and 6 Chiefs.
The Government of Canada acquires approximately 12,335 square meters of land in the area known as "The Pines." It was this burial ground that lay at the heart of the events of 1990.

He was commenting on a draft audit prepared for his department of money spent to police Kanesatake before and after the violent January 2004 crisis that engulfed the village of 1,900 people after the community's grand chief at the time, James Gabriel, pledged to get tough on organized crime.
Kanesatake has been run for years by a fractious Mohawk band whose spending has left the community bankrupt.
Gabriel told the CBC that though policing expenses were high in Kanesatake during his tenure, all spending was approved by the federal and provincial governments.

 Police try to negotiate end to Kanesatake standoff
Negotiations began Tuesday to try to end a standoff in the Mohawk community of Kanesatake, in which protesters are preventing the reserve's police officers from leaving their barracks.
Residents are also angered by the takeover of the local police force by aboriginal police officers who were brought in from elsewhere in the province to curtail the sale of contraband cigarettes.
Kanesatake was involved in the 1990 Oka crisis, in which one police officer was killed when police stormed barricades erected to prevent expansion of a nearby golf course onto land the Mohawks considered sacred.

The name Kanesatake was chosen because it was an Indian term which meant "Camp on a Hill", which is what the camp was.
During the summer of 1945, the stones that formed the words "Camp Kanesatake" on the smaller hill overlooking Washington Lake were removed and a forty foot tall letter "C" with a "K" inside of it was trenched into the same hill with the stones being used to fill the trench.
In 1951 the stones were cemented over permanently and the giant camp logo stood as a landmark in the area for six decades since.

Camp Kanesatake was built in 1926 and was the Wolverine Council camp until it was sold in 1981.
It was a meeting place for Chief Tecumseh during the War of 1812, had Indian burial grounds on it and had the ruins of an old Indian smoke tower buried in the center of the camp.
I do know the OA was supposed to organize in 1930 at Camp Kanesatake and Tipisa was created instead and proved to be a popular program in the three states where it existed for many years.

The RCMP also used the name of the legendary Egyptian queen because it begins with a C; all investigations initiated by the Mounties' C Division, based in Westmount, are labelled with a word that begins with C. Residents of Kanesatake described Simon as an outsider who kept mostly to herself.
Simon is alleged to be the head of the network that focused on exporting marijuana and ecstasy to the United States, said Cpl. Sylvain L'Heureux, an RCMP spokesperson.

Then the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake entered the fray, hired their own lawyers and consultants, and are opposing the mine in court, in an appeal of a decision by the Commission for the Protection of Agricultural Territory of Québec (CPTAQ) to allow the mine to proceed.
The harmful effects of the mine have not been properly assessed by the company, and -in fact- many of the deleterious effects have been ignored by the company.

Come what may, James Gabriel and Kanesatake are stuck with each other until the next band council elections in 2004, barring an unanticipated reversal.
As for Bonspille, he says that while the Kanesatake band council has no choice but to reinstate Gabriel as Grand Chief, they won’t be going out of their way to make life easy for him.

These two police officers have been told directly by the Kanehsatake Police Commission that their involvement and presence in Kanehsatake is not welcomed, and that their presence is an incitement given the past record of violence carried out by the two within the community.
The legality of the KPSC as well as the Tripartite Policing Agreement [TPA] is in question and has yet to be resolved by the community of Kanehsatake and hence remains an illegal agreement between the Federal and Provincial governments and James Gabriel.
Please note that contrary to an earlier Communique, members of the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake are not eligible to be on the new Commission.
