When Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released in 1979, Gene Roddenberry claimed that the radically different appearance of the Klingons in the film was how they were always supposed to have looked, but they didn't have the budget for it in the 1960s.

Star Trek ships clearly use a shield system which is more like a bubble, placing some distance between the impact of weaponry on the shields as opposed to the ship's actual structure.
And even if Star Wars' one-man fighters are faster and more maneuverable than the Star Trek capital ships, or even the shuttles or runabouts, the Warp speed factor would once again make them an elusive target to try and hit, even for many, many fighters.
Star Wars is a pretty damn resilient, to-the-death universe overall, so Star Trek would need to kill them all to really do the job.

Star Trek is supposed to be fun and interesting and the third season is where it stopped being fun and interesting.
Trek was made on a shoe string budget, was beat up by the producers from the first episode when they demanded Roddenberry change to a Cowboys and Indians in space style that went against the whole Pike scenario, and was shown no respect by the studio.
When Dr. Marcus, in the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, pops up in Kirk's life with a kid that's sure to be old enough to be a factor in his life, especially during the TV series, this gnaws at the viewer's sensibilities.

It details the time-line of the often confusing Star Trek universe in careful academic detail, yet the narrative is entertaining enough to make it readable from cover to cover.
The only problem I have with it is that I bought it when Star Trek Deep Space Nine was ending it's fourth season, and in the book, it goes up to the end of it's fourth season.
Also for writers who want to create between the time lines listed in the book, it is a very well organized tool, and when possible, it reveals the contradictions or problems found by the authors in conjunction with the original writers, so you can fill in the blanks of the history or propose new theories.

And in the midst of such a horrific, unrelenting, and a very un-Star Trek like situation, the whole reason Picard and friends were suffering and fighting so hard was to preserve that very future of hope and peace that has always made Star Trek so appealing.
From that first great opening shot where the Klingon moon explodes, catching the Excelsior in its wake and tossing it as if it were a little piece of driftwood in a wave, you knew this was a film that would depict an historic event in the Federation's history.
PRAISES: Not only was this one of the funniest Star Trek films I've ever seen, but also one of the funniest films of all time period (at least in my opinion.) Once again, it's our familiarity with these characters that makes it so.
