  MAWS - showing resource: kangaroo
A platform game in which the player controls a mother Kangaroo who must climb through the treetops trying to rescue her captured son.
Numerous monkeys, the kidnappers of her child, roam the levels set on stopping the player's progress.
The monkeys constantly throw apples at the Kangaroo which must either be avoided (either by ducking or jumping, depending on the height of the approaching apple), or punched away, the latter of which allows the Kangaroo to punch the apple back towards the attacking monkey.

 MAMExpose - Kangaroo/Springer/JJ Squawkers
Kangaroo was their best arcade game, and while it's fun, charismatic, and innovative, it falls well behind its inspiration Donkey Kong thanks to subpar graphics and less than reliable control.
I grew up playing the 5200 version of Kangaroo, and while it played and looked like the arcade game, it was missing some features.
Kangaroo's unique play mechanics and clever setting help distinguish it from other platformers available in the early 80's, but its sloppy artwork and unprofessional design prevent it from being on par with Donkey Kong, earning it a merely satisfactory six.

The object of Kangaroo is to score as many points as you can while helping Mother Kangaroo rescue her precious baby.
Mother Kangaroo must punch out each monkey one by one, or climb up ladders to a tree branch where she can jump onto the platform to save her baby.
Mother Kangaroo can leap from the edge of a branch or a log, but she must land flat on her feet.

Kangaroo was originally an arcade game by Sun Corp (a little known Japanese game manufacturer), and was licensed by Atari for distribution in the US.
Kangaroo was released for the 2600 as part of Atari's push to bring more arcade games to its home systems (2600, 5200, 400/800), and like most of the 2600 arcade ports was programmed by GCC.
The 2600 version is a good translation which features 3 of the 4 arcade levels, decent graphics, and pretty good control (there's a minor bug on the second level that's worth noting).

Atari Corp released it as Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar 64, Atari Interactive released it for the PC platform.

The biggest problem with Kangaroo for the VCS is the same Achilles' Heel that has brought down many a well-intentioned game for that system - blinkin' sprites.
At times, when the number of monkeys and projectiles tops out, you can see your opponents about as well as you can see, oh, say, the ghosts in the 2600 version of Pac-Man - and that's not a good thing.
Other than that, Kangaroo is a decent translation.

The graphics are no where near good, not even for the 2600.
I usually give 2600 games a control rating of 90-95% because there just isn't much that you can screw up with a four-way joystick and a single button, but Kangaroo manages to somehow screw it up.
The 2600 version does a great job of replicating the feel of the arcade, but without the graphics.

Like a lot of people of my generation, I grew up playing with the Atari 2600 and the stack of game cartridges that I acquired in the early 1980s.
It was one of my most beloved beloved toys of my youth, and when my 2600 console died sometime in the late 1980s, I thought I'd never play a lot of those games again.
Sure, there were a bunch of other companies, like Activision, who made games for the 2600, but I'm talking about games (especially a lot of the latter-day games) like Pole Position, Kangaroo, Dig Dug, etc. versions of which Atari made for the 2600.
