 kangaroo
Kangaroos are native to the continent of Australia, while tree-kangaroos are also found in New Guinea.
Studies of kangaroos and wallabies have demonstrated that, beyond the minimum energy expenditure required to hop at all, increased speed requires very little extra effort (much less than the same speed increase in, say, a horse, a dog, or a human), and also that little extra energy is required to carry extra weight.
A sequencing project of the Kangaroo genome was started in 2004 as a collaboration between Australia (mainly funded by the State of Victoria) and the NIH in the USA.

Kangaroos are marsupials, which means “pouched animal.” Grey kangaroos are one of the largest of all kangaroos, weighing between 40 and 150 pounds, and standing up to five feet tall, though an adult male can be as tall as seven feet when standing upright.
Kangaroos have large, muscular legs and a long, tapered tail almost as long as the rest of the body and capable of supporting the animal’s weight.
When a kangaroo hops, the tail balances the weight of the body and keeps the animal from falling on its face; when seated, the tail acts as a “third leg” for a tripod effect.

KANGAROOS - Where do they come from? Why do they hop? Did they evolve from some other animal? - ChristianAnswers.Net
In between are the tree kangaroos (a specialized group comprising nine species that live and move about in the trees), and those commonly called wallabies.
This remarkable phenomenon occurs in the red kangaroo, the eastern grey kangaroo, the common wallaroo (euro), the brush-tailed bettong, and several of the larger wallabies.
If modern kangaroos really did come from it, all this shows is the same as we see happening today, namely that kangaroos come from kangaroos, ‘after their kind’.
