Topic: Kangaroo route

Kangaroo route - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The kangaroo route is a term to denote passenger airline flights between Europe and Australasia; these flights generally have a stopover along the Southeast Asia flight corridor.
Flights along this route are considered to generate high yield for airlines; this is due to the large population of European ancestry in Australia and New Zealand, along with the long distances involved.
The name refers not only to the kangaroo, native to Australia, but also to the fact that the journey was traditionally accomplished with at least two "hops" due to the stopovers, alluding to the kangaroo's means of locomotion.

British Airways ethnic liveries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While almost all are clearly related to a country, each aircraft also carried the name of that country on the rear of the fuselage.
The large number of German designs are a result of the existence of the BA subsidiary Deutsche BA, and the numerous Australian designs can be attributed to the airline's alliance with Qantas and the importance of the kangaroo route.
The adoption of this livery was seen as a move away from the traditional and strictly British image of the carrier.

The Kangaroo fleet does not have this second J lower deck sub-cabin, but commences the Y cabin at row 34, with a total of only 65 J seats.

Covering everything from a HU-16 Albatross to modern Cessna jets, the fog which delayed the departure of the 36 crews looked set to be the least of their worries on a route which will take them across Europe to Corfu, through Crete, Cairo, Luxor and Singapore, before passing over Ayers Rock in the final stages.

Race organisers revealed that a special trophy would be awarded in memory of two entrants who died on Tuesday en route to the starting-point.

The decision not to use the A380s initially on the highly competitive kangaroo route surprised observers, given that Singapore has nominated London-Singapore-Sydney as its launch route and expects to start the service by the end of June 2006.
Mr Chew said he was not surprised Qantas had chosen to deploy its first A380s on US routes as it was no secret that there was little competition on the route and yields were high.
When challenged to say what the fares should be on the route he stopped short of committing Singapore to cheaper tickets, saying only that the airline would remain competitive and prices would be determined by supply and demand.

The Kangaroo Route is considered one of the main 'pillars' of Qantas' international profitability (the other being the Trans-Pacific Routes to the US).
The Kangaroo Route is operated with British Airways through the Joint Services Agreement, which is signed off on by the ACCC, which allows for controlled competition, code sharing, joint use of ground services, and cost savings, which translate into very nice profits.
The routes to London Via Hong Kong and Bangkok are covered by other deals but sort of mesh with the main route to London via Singapore.

Competition on the "Kangaroo route", which has 30 airlines vying for passengers, is also particularly savage between airlines.
A non-stop flight would not only be attractive to passengers who can afford to pay a premium fare, but would spare an airline at least one set of landing fees.
Qantas has made little secret of its desire to start a non-stop London to Sydney route, but there is still some debate how this could be achieved.

The new ‘green’ routes, the first major route restructure between Australasia and Europe since World War II, will drastically reduce aviation fuel consumption, cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce travel times between Australasia and Europe and enhance aviation safety.
Mr Smith also said the revamped air route structure, which capitalises on the advanced avionics aboard today’s new-generation of wide-bodied aircraft, would enhance aviation safety due to reduced route congestion and simplified air traffic controller workload.
IATA estimates the new air routes will reduce aviation fuel use by a minimum of 25,000 tonnes annually between Australasia and Europe, while reducing travel times up to a half an hour.
