Kangchenjunga or Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, the second highest in Nepal and the highest in India, located in the Taplejung district of Sikkim, straddling the frontier between Nepal and India.
Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations made by the British 1849 Great Trigonometric Survey showed Mount Everest to be the highest and Kangchenjunga the third-highest.
Kangchenjunga is known for its famous views from the hill station of Darjeeling.

The multi-summited Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, lies in the extreme north-eastern corner of Nepal requiring some 30 days for the classic trek that visits both the Yalung Glacier on the southern side and the Kangchenjunga Glacier on the northern.
On the southern approach from the picturesque town of Ilam, in the tea-growing region of Nepal, the vegetation changes with increasing altitude from lush, sub-tropical rice-paddies and banana palms, through alpine forests of fir and pine, to the arctic tundra of the yak pastures at Ramze nestling beneath the moraines of the Yalung Glacier.
Regrettably a circuit of Kangchenjunga is not possible as the necessary crossing of the international border with Sikkim is forbidden.

The Kangchenjunga trek has only been opened to trekkers for the last 10 years and requires special permits, which means the area is relativeley unaffected by the tourism that has changed the Everest region.
This gradual gain in altitude means it is easy to acclimatize along the way, and is not overly strenuous, though some of the days may be long.
The trek starts in the sparsely populated lowlands of the Hindu people, progressing through Buddhist and Tibetan villages and finally into the unpopulated mountain areas where there are spectacular views of Kangchenjunga and majestic peaks such as Jannu (7710m) and Kambachen.

Popularly translated as “The five treasures of the great snow” Kangchengunja was first explored in 1899 by Vittorio Sella the famous Italian photographer and Douglas Freshfield of the U.K. The first attempt of this peak was made in 1905 and resulted in the death of 4 people.
In 2002, George visited the eastern side of Kangchenjunga in Sikkim, but was unable to repeat Sir Douglas Freshfield’s famous circuit of the mountain in 1899.

We are the first British expedition to summit on Kangchenjunga via the South West Face since the first ascent on 24th May 1955 by George Band and Joe Brown.
John and Ady are the first British Servicemen to climb Kangchenjunga and (we think) are the 10th and 11th Britons to summit on the mountain by any route.
Ady replaced the incapacitated Dave Bunting on the first summit team and may be the first ascentionist of Kangchenjunga who won his place because he correctly guessed which hand a 'midget gem' was in.

The weather last night at Base Camp was a bit windy but obviously nothing compared to what was experienced by the Indian expedition at Camp 1 whose Camp Baffin 4 tents were flattened by gale force winds and they had to seek sanctuary in our Terra Novas which weathered the storm with ease.
This year has seen a lot of snowfall in the Kangchenjunga Himal and we are experiencing similar problems on this side of the mountain to those which have caused you to run out of time.
George and other members of the 1955 expedition will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of their first ascent in Snowdonia on Saturday 20th May and if we have any worthwhile news we will certainly keep them informed.
