KANGLA is the most sacrosanct place for the Manipuris since time immemorial, as it is a place regarded as the ‘navel’ of their ancient kingdoms and mythologies.
After the arrival at the palace from Kangla the King’s formal official coronation was carried out at the royal Darbar Hall located on the western side of the present Govindajee’s Temple in the presence of a large gathering of audience of the public including ministers and other high ranking civil and military officials.
Kangla is not only the sacred place for all the coronations of the kings of Manipur but it is also a traditional place of cremation of the kings of Manipur when they die - it is a must part of the Manipuri royal customs.

 Rediscovering a heritage
The essence of the Kangla development project is the preservation of the State's heritage and the revival of Kangla's pristine glory.
This will involve the development and beautification of the historical ruins and sacred places inside Kangla, the reconstruction of Kangla Sha, the state emblem, which was destroyed by the colonial forces at the end of the Anglo-Manipur war of 1891.
According to a booklet on Kangla published by the State Archaeology Department, the dragons were erected by Chinese prisoners of war.

Jagat Ram, an assistant sub inspector of police, who had accompanied the rescue team to Kangla Jot glacier and came to Shimla with the body, said there were reports that four bodies were sighted at the glacier in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district but the rescue team could recover only one body.
Born on Dec 15, 1952, Margot was 29 years old in 1981 and it was presumed that she had gone to Kangla Jot area for trekking and was buried under snow sometimes in the summer of 1981.
Laxmi, a guide who had sighted the bodies, could not locate the exact site and said the glacier had changed so much in the past one month that it was difficult to pinpoint the spot and the rescue team had to return with only one body, rescue team members said.

The Govindajee temple, constructed by King Chandrakirti in 1869, is being restored under the supervision of the Paris based Council of Monument and Sites, while a 26-member construction workers group from West Bengal is about to complete the southern wall.
The chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh, is heading the Kangla Fort Board, and is in charge of reconstruction and maintenance.
Visitors are allowed into Kangla for a fee of Rs 2 per adult and Rs 1 per child.

Udaipur (Lahul-Spiti) police station in-charge O P Sharma said that as soon as information about the German couple was received, a team of special police officers was sent to scan the region till Kangla Jot glacier, but they could not trace them.
With heavy snowfall in the region, the police fear that the landmarks could get buried and the couple might not be able to find their way.

Imphal: A newly formed youth organisation on January 18 threatened that over 10,000 youth would self-immolate if the territorial integrity of Manipur was disturbed during talks between the Centre and National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Issac/Muivah (NSCN-IM).
The Manipur Forward Youth Front (MFYF) said if the Central government disturbed the Manipur boundary during talks with the NSCN-IM, more than 10,000 youth would self- immolate at historic Kangla, the place of ancient Manipuri rulers in Imphal.
The statement signed by MFYF secretary general Sapamcha Kangleipal said about 100 centres would be opened soon to enrol volunteers from different parts of the state.
