Kanika Bandyopadhyay joined Sangeet Bhavana as a teacher and in due course became Head of the Department of Rabindra Sangeet and later its Principal.
Kanika was married to Birendra Chandra Bandypadhyay, former deputy librarian of Viswa Bharati University, in 1945.

Kanika Bandyopadhyay, exponent of Rabindranath Tagore songs, whose melodious voice won the hearts of millions over half-a-century, died at the State-run SSKM hospital on Wednesday morning after a protracted illness.
Bandyopadhyay (76), one of the few surviving disciples of Tagore, was admitted to the hospital on March 8 with complains of acute lung infection and cardiological complications, hospital sources said here.
Atal Behari Vajpayee today condoled the death of noted Rabindra Sangeet exponent Kanika Bandopadhyay, and said her passing away is a loss to the world of Indian music and culture.
