WDOB.net MAI Shotokan Kata :: Kanku Dai
The name Kanku is frequently translated as "To look at the sky." I prefer a different interpretation, "The View of the Sky." Other possible interpretations: Looking at the Emptiness and Sky Watching.
At some point the name Koshokun was abandoned in favor of the name Kanku, and the -Dai suffix was appended when the kata Kanku-Sho was brought into the Shotokan canon.
If the Channan theory is true, then Kanku is probably also loosely based upon this kata, and the Heian and it are actually parallel developments that are different views of the same kata.

 Shotokan Kata
Dai refers to big/large movements and is a less complicated kata than its Sho version.
I believe the Sho version of a kata is the higher kata and shows that karate-ka can achieve a great deal with less effort but at the same time the practitioner must be more highly skilled to achieve this.

Kanku Sho is the minor form of this kata and derives its name from the opening movement of gazing toward the sky.
The embusen of the kata is similar to that of Kanku Dai, but it begins differently.

 Shotokan Karate
The name Kanku means "to look at the sky", and was given to the kata by Funakoshi, probably because of the opening movement of the kata, somewhat resembling lookup up at the sky through the rising hands.
There are stories that this kata used to be practiced on top of a cliff or hill at dawn, and the opening movement was actually following the rising of the sun.
Kanku Dai is the longest Shotokan kata, but certainly not the most difficult, since most of the techniques found in Kanku Dai have already been covered in the five Heian kata.

 Shotokan Kata
Elements of the five Heian kata also resemble parts of the kata Kanku Dai and Bassai Dai and it is possible that Sensei Itosu created them from these, since they would have been too difficult to teach to beginners.
This kata was derived from the Gojushio-Dai kata bei Itosu.
Not in keeping with the traditional sho - dai pairing where the sho kata is the shorter and more complex kata, the Gojushio-Sho is the longer and less complex of the two Gojushio katas.

Even though the kata is shorter and requires less time to perform, many karateka report that Kanku-Sho tires them more than the bigger kata, therefore suggesting that it is more energy intensive and anaerobic.
There is also a version of Kanku that still carries the original name of Kushanku.

The connection with Kanku Dai, even without analysis by experts, is readily apparent from the entire first half of the kata, since Heian Nidan mimics Kanku Dai almost exactly.
In fact, the resemblance is so strong that even long time experts and masters frequently confuse the two kata and change from one kata to the other without thinking right in the middle of national tournament performances both in Japan and in the West.
Later, Enpi, Kanku Dai, Kanku Sho, Meikyo, and Unsu will challenge the karateka to their absolute physical limits.

Containing many back stances and larger scale movements than the original Sho kata, this is the one believed to have been created first and the Sho kata was thought to be added later.

Kanku-Sho (the suffix - Sho, 'lesser' or 'minor', indicating its origins) was created by Master Yasutsune Itosu.
The basic embusen or configuration of the two Kata is very similar in essence, but Kanku-Sho devotes most of its attention to middle-level techniques, in contrast to the upper-level bias of Kanku-dai understanding this should make students aware of such considerations as the difference in height necessary in the two jumping techniques.
