The Kanmon Straits (関門海峡 Kanmon Kaikyō) or Straits of Shimonoseki is the stretch of water separating two of Japan's four main islands.
On the Honshu side of the water is Shimonoseki (下関, which contributed "Kan" to the name of the strait) and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu, whose former city and present ward, Moji (門司), gave the strait its "mon".
The Kanmon straits is also the connection between the Sea of Japan and the Inland Sea.

Together with Shimonoseki on Honshu the city is the major part of the Kanmon Straits area, which has a total population of about 1.3 million, and Kokura station in Kitakyushu is 20 minutes by shinkansen from the city of Fukuoka which also has a population of about 1.3 million.
Located at a strategic position on the south side of the Kanmon Straits, Kitakyūshū is an important transport hub for traffic between Honshū and Kyūshū and has a large port.
The largest ones are the Kanmon Straits bridge (J: Kanmon Kyo) between Kitakyūshū and Shimonoseki (on Kyūshū and Honshū respectively) and the Waka-To Ō-hashi bridge linking Tobata and Wakamatsu wards.

In reprisal for attacks by the Choshu clan on foreign ships passing through the Kanmon Straits (Kanmon Kaikyo) between the large islands of Honshu and Kyushu, naval forces from four countries, Britain (8 ships), Holland (4 ships), France (3 ships), and the U.S. (one ship) attacked forts in Choshu.
The Choshu clan was following an 1863 Imperial Edict to expel the foreign 'barbarians', in what is known as the Sonnō jōi ("Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians") movement.
The objective of the attack by the four allied powers was to ensure that the straits remained open to foreign ships, this being the quickest sea route from Nagasaki to Osaka and Edo (later called Tokyo).

The Kanmon Straits between Honshu and Kyushu was connected by a railway tunnel in 1942, as the first strait crossing in Japan.
The idea of connecting Hokkaido with Hoshu by an underwater tunnel existed even before the world war II, and an investigation of soil conditions under the seikan straits strated in 1946, immediately after the war.
The MOC is now conducting investigations mainly on natural and socio-economic conditions for those projects while proffessional technical assistance has been made by the HSBA.
