There is no doubt that the Kannada film industry is in the doldrums and needs rescuing, but doing it at the expense of other language films is unacceptable to many film personalities, including playwright and Jnanpith Award winner Girish Karnad.
Kannada films also enjoy a 100 per cent entertainment tax exemption compared with the 40 per cent (down from 70 per cent) that other language films pay.

In protest against the "exorbitant and arbitrary rentals" charged for Kannada films by an influential section of cinema owners, the Kannada film industry is observing an indefinite bandh from tomorrow.
The Kannada Film Producers' Association president, Basanth Kumar Patil, told The Hindu on Monday that the bandh was supported by all wings of the film industry, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and non-Kannada film distributors.
The stand of Kannada film industry was justified by the immediate response with the Minister for Information, Kagodu Timmappa, promising action in the matter.
