The perfumers of Kannauj have a long way to go before they match the economies of scale of the corporate giants in the arena of fragrances.
The perfumers of Kannauj say that almost 70 per cent of the production is consumed by the gutkha industry, while about 20 per cent is used by the cosmetic industry.
While the Kannauj perfume industry is not as organised as it could be to make it a real force to reckon with on an international scale, various attempts have been made to provide a boost to the enterprise.

By the end of the 8th century, Kannauj became the focus of a three-way contest by the three dominant dynasties of the time, the Pratiharas of Malwa, the Rashtrakutas of the Deccan, and the Palas of Bengal.
Kannauj recovered some of its former prosperity under the Gahadvalas, but the respite was brief, for the city was sacked again in 1194 by Mohammed of Ghori, and by the early years of the 13th century it was incorporated into the Delhi Sultanate.

KANNAUJ: Perfume manufacturing industry in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh is having a difficult time due to the ban on gutka by several states by Government.
The perfumers of Kannauj say that almost 70 per cent of the production is consumed by the gutka industry, while about 30 per cent is used by the cosmetic industry.
Kannauj's perfume industry is the largest perfumery of the country: a fact that not many are aware of.
