The Akshaya, which has been piloted in Malappuram and is being launched in seven districts including Kannur, aims to provide computer literary to one person each of the 3,90,618 households identified for the scheme.
The scheme is being implemented with the participation of the local bodies and entrepreneurs in 97 local bodies, including 81 panchayats and nine block panchayats in the district.
District Collector K.S. Srinivas, overall in charge of the project, told a press conference here on Monday that Rs.2 crores has been mobilised from the local bodies for launching the project.

During the 16th century the Portuguese set up trading posts to the north in Kannur and to the south in Kochi, but the Zamorin resisted the establishment of a permanent Portuguese presence in the city, although in 1509 the kingdom was forced to accept a Portuguese trading post in Chaliyar[citation needed].
