kanotix.com :: GNU Linux Live system based on Debian, optimized for HD-install and high performance
Kanotix is a rock-solid Linux based on Debian, which contains the newest packages and recognizes more modern hardware than any other operating system in use today.
Kanotix is assembled for 32 Bit i586 and for AMD 64 using the most up-to-date kernel with unique patches.
Since financing Kanotix through donations has proved a failure and I am planning restructuring to a more stable base (be it Ubuntu or Debian will have to show in tests) and I myself regard Debian/Sid as unfortunately not compliant with a more commercial orientation, he has left the project.

Kanotix is based on KDE and features amaroK, Konqueror, Kaffeine, K3b, and the rest of the huge suite of KDE tools, with the notable exception of KDE's KOffice suite (which is available in the Kanotix-Lite version).
Kanotix is both an excellent standalone distribution, as well as a great halfway point to full debian.
I have found the Kanotix releases this year (the one around the new year and this one) to be significant improvements over earlier releases, for the simple reason that the hard disk installer is now quite simple and it already works well, even if it is not completely tested in all respects.

KANOTIX comes with a selection of applications that is probably better suited for an average home user that those included in Knoppix.
I haven't used KANOTIX 64, but I would be very surprised if it wasn't as bilingual as KANOTIX 32, which when booting from the LiveCD allows you to choose between German and English with German being the default.
KANOTIX definitely deserves a higher profile than it currently has, so Ladislav has done a real service with this article.

 upgrade broke kanotix - Knoppix.net
There was a post on the German kanotix forum about this same error, suggested fix (Kano) was to insure kanotix sources are in the sources.list (they are).
Also, while kanotix really is much smoother with upgrades than knoppix, it's still not as smooth as installing a fresh debian install (and you should consider trying that sometime).
This sed issue shouldn't be taken as representative of kanotix upgrades...this is the first time I've had anything that was really the least bit frustrating happen with a kanotix upgrade.

Kanotix also has the best hardware detection and configuration scripts I have ever seen and they can be used to supplement any residual failings of the Debian-Sarge installer (in particular for the configuration of X).
As any other good Debian-based distro, Kanotix uses the fantastic APT Debian package manger which allows you to install any of the 18000+ applications in the Debian repositories with one simple command: 'apt-get install foo' where 'foo' is the name of the application you want to install.
Kanotix is officially 'designed to run with modern hardware (i586 and above)' and while it is possible to run Kanotix on old hardware, it is cleary not an optimal solution.

 wtfm … I like it :: Kanotix and non-free stuff :: June :: 2005
With Kanotix all you have to do is be online and run two scripts, first one updates the local scripts to the latest version, second one takes care of the complete driver install.
This is just one of the things Kanotix has gotten right (or at least as close not to matter imho), if you are having any hardware/driver problems I’d recommend it over Knoppix, especially for installations/laptops/amd64, but ymmv.
BTW everyone’s favourite Ubuntu is now planning to use the Kanotix/Mepis model (live cd is the desktop install cd) for their next release, though I don’t know yet just what they are planning to do for this installer (vis-a-vis cloning the running system or installing a pristine system).

KANOTIX is a Debian unstable-based distribution from Germany, distributed on a live CD.
Kanotix was one of the first Distros that I installed to my HD, along with DreamLinux(The Best) I had a whole lot of fun playing with it, after a while I found that updating and upgrading was too much of a challenge....easy to install, easy to use, hard to upgrade...too many bugs.
As eco2geek mentioned, some (most) of the kanotix devs have started up sidux, which will pretty much carry on where kanotix (as it was) left off.
