The Kansan Glaciation (known in UK as the Anglian glaciation, Elster glaciation in northern Europe and the Mindel glaciation in the Alps) was a severe glacial period in the Pleistocene.
The Kansan Glaciation is generally taken as covering the period between 410,000 and 380,000 years before the present.
It is considered that the Kansan Glaciation marks the absolute maximum extent of continental ice sheets in the Quaternary.

Since the glacial period most of Illinois' surface is level or gently sloping with the exception of a broken, hilly ridge that crosses the southern part of the state and the rugged terrain of the northwestern corner in Jo Davies County.
A terminal moraine forms when a glacier is melting as rapidly as it is advancing; the rocks and soil freed from the melting ice settle as the water flows away.

Kansan deposits are at the bottom of the Kansas River valley fill and are overlain by Wisconsinan and Recent deposits, at least locally at Kansas City.
A lobe of one of the Kansan glaciers extended south of the Kansas River valley for nearly 10 miles in northwestern Johnson County and northeastern Douglas County, and meltwater from the ice front deposited sand and gravel that locally is preserved in low areas of the pre-glacial topography.
Kansan deposits, both till and outwash, occur as much as 200 feet above the Kansas River flood plain in an area 1 to 10 miles south of the valley and as low as the present flood plain at the edge of the valley.

During Kansan Glaciation the northern two-thirds of the area was occupied by glacial ice that caused major but only temporary changes in the drainage pattern.
The presence of glacial ice over the part of the mapped area south of the Kansas River valley probably was of fairly short duration, for the diversion channels are not as deeply incised as some channels in Wabaunsee County that were utilized by the diverted river for a longer period.
A lag concentrate of pebbles, cobbles, and boulders of limestone and glacial erratics is the remnant of glacial outwash along the diversion channel in the valley of the North Branch Wakarusa River.

The Wisconsin glacial stage has probably been the best studied glacial advance because it was the last glacial advance in Ohio, and thus the deposits are in tact and in excellent condition for study.
As the earliest glaciation came down, whether it be the Nebraskan, or Kansan can't be determined, but early glacial ice dammed the waters of the Teays river to the north forming a huge lake in south-eastern Ohio, north-eastern Kentucky, and western West Virginia.
