 Manhattan Municipal Band History
The band's first contract with the City of Manhattan, signed March 9, 1920, stipulated that it would perform one concert in each of the winter months and a total of seventeen concerts during the summer.
The typical contract on which the band and the city seem to have settled upon by the mid-point of the century provided for not less than ten weekly concerts, free and open to the public, with the possibility left open for further concerts deemed necessary for "worthy civic enterprise where their services might be needed."
Norvell was appointed conductor of the band on February 7, 1950 and by the time he retired the post had led the band longer than all of his five predecessors combined.

Glen "Bummer the Drummer" Ward was born in Fayette, Missouri in 1947.
Horn bands were in big demand, so you had to hit the stage singing and playing hot arrangements with a horn section doing choreography.
As 1977 rolled around Bummer was back in Missouri living in Kansas City, MO, where he started his own horn band, "The Kansas City Streetband" consisting of guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet and trombone.

In March of that year the Kansas conference of the Methodist Church was held in Lawrence.
The music furnished by the old band was one of the most appreciated features of that quarter-centennial celebration.
Although the author has found no records of them there may have been military bands at Fort Leavenworth or other posts in Kansas territory, but he believes this is the first band of any kind organized in Kansas.

A demo, cut at a small studio in Liberal, KS for a $300 fee wound up in the hands of a contact on the east coast, and good news came about the tape while the band was gigging at "The Opera House" in Ellinwood, KS in 1973.
Wally Gold came to audition Kansas at the Opera House, looking for a "house band" for the newly created TV show "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" and competed with "Wolfman Jack's Midnight Special", all prior to MTV.
The band's biggest single, "Dust in the Wind," has gained some recent acclaim, being used in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure", a Subaru commercial, and in the film Old School.

But before the world renowned Kansas line-up of Livgren, Steve Walsh, Richard Williams, Robby Steinhardt, Dave Hope and Phil Ehart broke into the national spotlight on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, there was another Kansas comprised of Livgren and a band of childhood friends.
After departing from the famous Kansas line-up in 19'83, Livgren formed a Christian based band deeply entrenched in his progressive rock roots called AD with former Kansas bassist, Dave Hope.

This was a great rock band, and I always got a kick out of this album cover for their Two For The Show live album released in 1978.
The cool thing about the 70's is that you had such unique sounding bands such as Kansas that employed violin sections while keeping it in the non-country, rock sound.
