Education in Kansas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Among the state-funded universities, the University of Kansas (KU) is the largest in terms of enrollment, with 26,980 at its Lawrence campus, KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, and Public Management Center (formerly the Capitol Complex) in Topeka.
In 1999, the Board ruled that instruction about evolution, the age of the earth, and the origin of the universe was permitted, but not mandatory, and that those topics would not appear on state standardized tests.
On November 8, 2005 the Kansas State Board of Education voted 6-4 to allow science students in public schools to hear materials critical of evolution in biology classes, allowing teaching of Intelligent Design to be taught in classes.

The board voted Thursday to approve the idea of locking students in to one tuition rate for their first four years of school.
Members of the Board of Regents were concerned that the four-year window would put excess pressure on students to graduate and could prevent them from studying abroad or working while they went to school.
The board questioned the current 26 percent four-year graduation rate at the University, but Lariviere said that was a common problem among public institutions of higher education.

 Kansas Board of Regents Policies
With particular reference to such interaction, the Board of Regents considers it of utmost importance that university employees conduct their affairs so as to avoid or minimize conflicts of time commitments and conflicts of interest, and that the Regents institutions must be prepared to respond appropriately when real or apparent conflicts arise.
Regents institutions are institutions of public trust; faculty and unclassified staff must respect that status and conduct their affairs in ways that will not compromise the integrity of the university.
The Name of the Board of Regents, a Regents institution or the Regents System may never be used as an endorsement of a faculty member or unclassified staff member's external activities without expressed and advance written approval of the University chief executive officer and/or the Board's President and Chief Executive Officer, as appropriate.

TOPEKA, Kansas — Once a leader in its investment in higher education, the state of Kansas has allowed public funding levels for its colleges and universities to drop significantly below both the national average and that of its neighboring Big 12 Conference states, according to research released today to the Kansas Board of Regents.
Mary McKeown-Moak, a partner in the national research firm MGT of America, Inc., told the state board that her findings also indicated that in addition to far fewer state dollars per student, faculty salaries also had fallen dramatically behind the national average as well as all neighboring states.
But from these current findings, it may be concluded that in comparison to the prior year, Kansas public financial support for higher education has continued to decline relative to national averages and to levels that are generally lower relative to the Big 12 states,” she said.

The district court dismissed PSU/KNEA's action against the Kansas Board of Regents/Pittsburg State University (KBR/PSU) and the Kansas Department of Human Resources (KDHR) because PSU/KNEA failed to name PERB in the case caption of the petition.
On appeal, PSU/KNEA argues that the district court erred in denying its motion to amend the case caption or, alternatively, that the case caption was sufficient to confer jurisdiction on the district court.
PERB is a state agency under the Kansas Department of Human Resources ('Respondent Agency'), whose mailing address is 401 S.W. Topeka Boulevard, Topeka, Kansas 66603-3182, the head of which agency is Richard E. Beyer, Secretary.
