Overprint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United States used this strategy to deal with thefts in Kansas and Nebraska in 1929, overprinting the common stamps of the time with "Kans." and "Nebr." (surviving examples are scarce and prized, the 10c priced at over $100 in 2000).
Overprints have occasionally been used on currency such as the overprints found on Haitian Gourdes at the end of the Baby Doc Duvalier regime.
The overprint was placed over the image of Baby Doc and his father the infamous Papa Doc, François Duvalier that was subsequently replaced with images of figures from the history of the Haitian Republic.

However, the overprint plate was set up to match the normal printing plate; that is to say, it had one vertical gap of 32mm to take account of the interpane gutter between the top and bottom panes.

 Alphabetilately: O is for Overprint
In the post-WWII period there were many overprints associated with the transition from wartime to peacetime, and the re-establishment of local governments in occupied areas such as Trieste.
The overprints were applied to the then-current stamps in use in the rest of the country, which were and are quite plentiful, so even today it's easy to find the un-overprinted versions and add one's own imitation of the overprint.
The true overprints were fairly crude and boring, but unscrupulous parties took advantage of the confusion, and of the trusting nature of collectors, and created bogus overprints for imaginary countries.

To detect a fake overprint cut a stamp horizontally through the overprint so that you have the top half of the overprint showing on a genuine stamp.
Then slide it over another stamp with the same overprint so that the top of the overprint on the genuine stamp covers the top of the overprint of the stamp you are examining.
If you start the overprint to match exactly at the left side and then look at the right side you will find that a genuine stamp matches exactly whereas if the stamp is spurious the letters on the right side will be slightly displaced.

Basal Pennsylvanian clastic strata (BPC) near the eastern Nebraska-Kansas border on the eastern flank of the Nemaha Uplift (NU) contain coarse, feldspathic sandstones and conglomerates derived from Proterozoic granitic basement in the NU.
Three well cores penetrating the BPC (KC81-1 at Nebraska Conservation and Survey Division; Kansas Geological Survey Emery Trust #1 and Heinen #1) capture multiple (perhaps 20-25 in one case), well-defined, fining-upward (FU) packages (0.2-5.0 m thick).
Paleosols and desiccation cracks in FU packages indicate a strong subaerial overprint on sediments, and it is likely that BPC were deposited on alluvial fans or, possibly, fan deltas.
