At Kanton our area of study was three miles to either side of the Heraclitus' anchorage, on the western side of the island where we were afforded protection from wind and swells.
Bleaching began, notably in the lagoons of Kanton and Orona, and mostly to the genera Echinopora, Goniastrea and Acropora.
Sydney is an uninhabited island with dense vegetation on it.

The islands' recorded history really begins with the whalers of the early 1800s, when the waters around the Phoenix Islands were a prime area for sperm whale hunting, and whaling ships were often in the area.
A number of the Phoenix Islands were mined for guano in the mid-1800s, but supplies were exhausted there earlier than in the rest of Kiribati, and the miners departed after a few years.
After Kiribati declared its independence in 1979, a small group of colonists from the Gilberts was sent to Kanton to act as caretakers for the island group, and in 2001 a settlement scheme for Orona was begun.

In 1937 the British built a radio station on Kanton, but in 1938 the United States formally claimed the island and placed it under the Dept. of the Interior.
British and American colonists were brought to Kanton in 1938 but were evacuated during World War II.

There were larger areas of dead coral here than on the south side of the island, and a large amount of calcareous algae plus a dense coverage of red coralline algae that we had also observed at the other two dive sites.

A November 1974 memo on Environmental Conditions of Canton Island states that "Most bulky noncombustibles are deposited in an area adjacent to the landfill, but there are other scattered areas with minor accumulations." The small junkyard where Bruce dumped the engine would seem to be one of these.
Once we were on the ground at Canton Island (officially Kanton since 1979) it became obvious that much had been done that was not mentioned in the official paperwork.

When operations on Canton Island were rapidly expanded to serve the missile launch program from Vandenberg AFB and to house a LORAN facility for guiding U.S. nuclear submarine forces, the whole WXLE facility was taken out of mothballs and shipped from Eniwetok.
There were plans afoot when I left the island for the new station, which was also rumored to have an FM transmitter as well as the AM outlet.
The remains of the very large antenna systems that I saw on Kanton (and which had still been standing in 1982 on an earlier DXpedition) were not MF, but two huge rotating log-periodic antennas which had operated in the HF bands.

This will be only the second operation from this rare IOTA location - the island is very difficult to land on from the sea and unless you fly by helicopter direct to the lighthouse you need pernission from the Makah Nation to cross their territory.

The Planetary Coral Reef Foundation’s (PCRF) research vessel, Heraclitus, visited the remote Phoenix Islands of the Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean in Nov/Dec 2004 and the crew discovered that a massive coral mortality event had occurred in Kanton Island between June 2002 and November 2004.
There is little or no significant input from any source of land based pollution on Kanton 2,3,4 and no obvious populations of coral predators such as Acanthaster planci.
These islands were considered by Dr. David Obura, a specialist in coral reefs, to be one of “Earth’s last pockets of primal ocean…those underwater havens that have remained unspoiled as long as the ocean can remember”1.

Last April, Young and Heaton sailed from Kanton Island, the Republic of Kiribati, carrying medical supplies for a 16-year old girl--unconscious and bleeding and in desperate need of medical attention--aboard the MV Te Taobe.
The vessel was adrift without power some 100 nautical miles west of Kanton Island.
At great personal risk, Young and Heaton set out in their 10-meter sailing vessel Don Henry in an attempt to catch up with the distressed vessel and deliver the medical supplies.
