Kanturk Castle in Co. Cork is one of a series of castles built during the 17th century using architectural ideas drawn from Elizabethan England marking a change from the old-style tower houses to roomier, better-lit and more comfortable fortified houses.
Kanturk Castle is one of the largest fortified houses built in Ireland, and is held in trust by An Taisce, as a National Monument to be conserved for future generations.

Kanturk Castle, although not actually within the parish in which the town is situated, is deserving of some notice from its name, and also from its connection with the founder of Kanturk.
Kanturk Castle, which is actually within the border of the adjoining parish of Kilmeen, consists of a parallelogram, 120 feet in length by 80 in breadth, with a large square tower at each angle: though never completed, it is carried to a considerable height, and from its massive appearance has a grand and imposing effect.
Kanturk, which is irregularly built, consists of several small streets, chiefly diverging from the centre, together with a new one called Egmont-place, which terminates towards the north, where is situated an elegant and commodious hotel, surrounded by a plantation.

Kanturk Poor Law Union was formally declared on the 21st December 1839 and covered an area of 385 square miles.
The building and operation of a workhouse had to be financed by the ratepayers of each union and in many places was seen as an intolerable imposition from England and its officials.
It took until 16th April 1844 to raise the first poor rate in Kanturk, with the workhouse being declared fit for the reception of paupers on 16th May 1844, and not receiving its first admissions until 18th July.
