Kanzashi first appeared when Japanese women dramatically changed from the traditional taregami hairstyle where the hair was kept straight and long, and adopted coiffured nihongami hairstyles.
Nowadays, kanzashi are still used in the traditional way by brides, geisha, professional kimono wearers, and by people in traditional Japanese arts such as tea ceremony and ikebana.
Kanzashi are still also used in large celebratory events such as the Coming of Age day and Shichi-Go-San.
